I've noticed the buzz in the community about Bukkit dying off. Some people seem to blame mojang for killing off minecraft and they are just trying to make money, or whatever people have to say.
Well here's the news:
BUKKIT IS NOT DEAD.
People have noticed the DMCA complaint with the downloads page. I don't know much about the DMCA complaint so correctly if I'm wrong but, that was just a copyright claim made by somebody. Evilseph decided to stop the project all together and then it made the huge outburst with people upset and claiming there will only be vanilla servers. People have blamed Mojang for doing this, first the EULA then bukkit going away. Some people are claiming mojang is putting minecraft to an end.

HOWEVER, Mojang was NOT responsible for this.
Apparently, EvilSeph decided to stop the bukkit project which started all the buzz. However, he did forget mojang OWNS bukkit. This has been for 2 years, so why are people complaining about mojang now? It was not his to discontinue.
Anyways, soon after that was posted, Jeb has replied this:
"Warren over at bukkit seems to have forgotten that the project was bought by Mojang over two years ago, and isn't his to discontinue."
Dinnerbone also came in saying this:
"I started Bukkit, I'm going to personally see it through for 1.8. Updating it now :)"

Seph claims he is fine with mojang updating bukkit to 1.8
Mojang is updating bukkit to 1.8, this is not the end. People have said mojang will take forever to update it without any direct proof. You can't jump to assumptions that mojang will take forever. Bukkit going away would not kill minecraft in the first place.
In short, it's said to see the original bukkit team quitting the project but Mojang is taking over. Bukkit is good to go.

Frankly though, Sponge will be a -MUCH- better alternative, and for that reason I wouldn't complain in the slightest if Bukkit did die. It works off Forge but in the style of bukkit. That means, it will be able to disable client-side mods built with Forge with a simple connection packet built into forge itself.
THAT means any hack mods made using Forge (eg xray, fly, player locators etc) will become instantly obsolete as the server can just turn them off.
It also means forge mods will get much better server-side integration. It's a huge bump up for the minecraft community but it'll be a while before it's stable.
As long the DMCA stays, distributing CraftBukkit would be illegal unless Wolverness' code is removed or he dislodges the complaint.
