Can I be op on your server? No. You can't.

The short answer is no, you cannot.

Recently, I've seen a rather large influx of players who immediately ask for op upon logging in to my server. Some legitimately want to be staff members (Albeit not terribly good ones), and others are there to scam me out of my server. I've decided to show how absurd it is to ask for a staff position as a player, and also how equally absurd it is for a staff member to op a player without knowing them.

New Servers

Your server might be new, but that doesn't mean you need staff members immediately. Whenever I create a new server, I start out with 6 slots. Hard on the memory, maybe - but it allows me to manage the server on my own until I get to know the players. After a week or so, you might be able to trust a/some player(s) with moderator (Kick/ban/mute ONLY). Then, if you decide to upgrade, you keep coverage throughout a larger portion of the day.

Administrators

A player logs on, and asks for op. What do you do? Don't give them op. I don't care if you need staff members because you can't keep up with thirty people asking only you for help, nothing good will come from op'ing random people. I can give you a couple examples of mistakes I've made in the past, when I started hosting servers.

Week 2.

I was hurting for staff members. My server had boomed from a 6 slot, to a 30 slot - and I wasn't able to keep up. I opped someone who had been playing for a day or two, and claimed to know a bit about plugins. My server's city ran on worldguard. I had to personally set up every single plot, and there were at least 80 or more. While trying to remove a plot, this new staff member accidentally deleted the parent plot (The city) thereby removing ALL other plots. Dozens of hours of hard work adding members to other members plots, setting flags, CREATING the plots, was all gone. This wasn't done maliciously, but emphasizes that even if you get someone who is mature, you need to start them out with some basic plugins. Don't throw them into the frying pan.

Week 3.

At this point I made the mistake of adding a new staff member based on the opinion of another staff member whom I trusted. They said they knew this person, and that he would make a great moderator. At the time I wasn't using permissions, so any staff had complete op powers. He replaced our entire spawn with TNT and blew it up. It was entirely my fault for op'ing him so quickly. If I had taken the time to see what he was like before turning him into a staff member, I may have found he wasn't suitable.

Players

To those of you who are asking for op on a server to actually be a staff member, and not break stuff. Think. If you get it within 10 minutes, the that server probably isn't going to last long - or will have many hardships. When you get op that quickly, it means there will be others who get it - who may not be as mature as you. I suggest leaving the server, or be prepared that it's going to get griefed often.

On the same note, here are some suggestions if you do want to be staff:

  • Play often. The current staff members should only promote mature, long time players.

  • Be mature. If you can't handle situations well, you wont make a good Moderator.

  • Learn to install/configure plugins. If you can, start your own private server to test them

  • Be Patient.

There are members on my server who have been asking for staff for nearly a year. One was op'd several days ago. He used to be a fairly immature player who caused trouble. Over the course of several months, he stopped causing hell, and started to help out. Put shortly - don't ask for staff. They will ask you if they see you are ready.

(As a side note, typically if you ask to be staff on my server, you wont -ever- get it.)

I'm here to review your server.

Like hell you are. I either troll these people, or kick/ban them immediately. I advise all reviewers to say: "I'm here to review your server, BUT I don't want Op or Creative!"

It's unfortunate that it's come to that, but I simply will not tolerate these types of people on my server.

I'm an official at ________, Can I have op?

YES, OF COURSE YOU CAN.

No. You are instant perma banned. If I feel particularly silly I might toy with you for a while. There's a fake op plugin that fake-ops a player. Been thinking of getting that. You might think they will get you extra views, or have some contacts. In reality they are there to break/steal your server. The most important thing is to ignore/remove these people - especially if your other staff members can promote.

I highly suggest running a permissions plugin and dono t give op to anyone but whom you trust the most.

Conclusion

We all start somewhere, and the more you keep at it, the more experienced you get at handling servers. I was a total noob in the beginning, and it cost me several worlds, fairly quickly. I have learned from my mistakes, and after a year of hosting servers I count myself experienced. I still have much to learn however. I'd like to hear from other admins and players who share or disagree with my opinions. That's all for now.

I still get this problem, however they now ask for different things:

100 Members- Can I be OP?

1,000 Members- Can I be Admin?

3,000 Members- Can I be Mod?

10,000 Members- Can I be Donor?

18,000 Members- Can I have /fly please?

Hey at least they are slightly improving.

ok this is sort of half-biassed because of this:
1. some people are actually reviewers.
2. some people (few) are officals for things (like me for my review site)
and 3: some people truly wont abuse the op and just want to build (also like me)
so there.
diamond still ;)

Simple plugins to get, so you don't have to do plots:
OwnBlocks, or OwnBlockX (X if you know how to set up MySQL) WorldGuard, I see you have this, but set all explosion damage, and all fire spread OFF! Make sure for OB and OBX you give people the right permissions! Really, that is all.

I agree, and I'm gonna follow what you said, I've recently made a server, but not even a week after, we had to make a new world with Whitelist on, because we didn't have Authme or anything like that, so players started getting in, and doing stuff, one even got in with MY name and griefed our whole town (Made in a forest) with LAVA. thanks for all the advice, I'm gonna make sure to do some of this stuff.

My users play for a month or two before they even can apply for staff. If they log on day 1 and ask for OP, they have a new MCBans local ban.

Very nice, I VERY mildy disagree (barely) i have been an op on 26 servers and most of them iasked in the first 10 mins :P, and actually i saved 8 servers from exticntion and I only come to help the owner, and be known for my helping. yet i truly think you did a great job. the part about getting op in the first ten minutes tho, is VERY VERY VERY TRUE! on aobut 10 servers(not saying any names) i tested, all succumbed to my op asking and gave me op. the next day i go on and theres about 15 people on, every one of them are ops! wth.... you are truly awesome.

And you are exactly spot on with hiring. I'm actually going to start interviewing potential staff members over skype, particularly if they aren't friends I've played with for the past few months.

Nocheat can prevent flying, among other things.

It is also important to use a spawn protection plugin such as worldguard. It can prevent people from breaking/placing blocks.

Its always safe to play with old friends eh? =)

If you do ever decide to make a public server again, try going with a hosting service - if your computer can't handle plugins, theirs can. I personally use Beastnode.
