Delete Comments
-an Article by Headaxe about wrong handling of negative feedback
Hello, Members of PMC.
Giving feedback on submissions on PMC was always an interesting topic to me, so it's time, I am contributing something to the eternal discussions.
Do you remember the days when you couldn't just upvote submissions with diamonds, but also downvote them?
Well, to be honest, I don't because I joined PMC about 3 years ago and that feature was banned then, however, I have seen the behavior of people on their submissions and in comments for quite a while now.
Why deleting comments is wrong
Comments are the only way which is left, to tell the author something about the quality of their submission.
Even unconstructive hate teaches you a lesson and informs you about the quality of it.
Of course, constructive feedback is appreciated but that doesn't mean, hate is entirely worthless.
Giving the author of a submission the power to delete any form of feedback on his submission is a horrible mistake.
If people have the ability to just hide and block valuable comments, whether they are negative or positive feedback then what is even the point of giving this feedback?
Who will learn a lesson from deleted and forgotten feedback? No one.
A very common reason for deleting comments on submissions is, that the author thinks, they might hurt their image and their reputation.
In my opinion, by handling negative feedback the right way you even increase your reputation and also learn a lesson from the feedback, instead of just forgetting about it as an author.
People who delete someone's comment instantly insult the author of the comment, because they tell them that their feedback is worthless. It isn't.
What can we do about it?
PMC finally has to see that the power if deleting feedback as the author makes learning from comments nearly impossible.
Comments are simply what the author gets back what he/she deservers for a submission.
Deleting comments should be a power that is only given to moderators and the actual author of the comment, not to the author of the submission the comments are posted on.
That's basically like letting someone escape from prison while signing a contract that prohibits chasing him.
What's your opinion on deleting comments?
You are free to discuss it in the comment section. (No comments will be deleted) ^.^

So that should be kept?
"People who delete someone's comment instantly insult the author of the comment, because they tell them that their feedback is worthless. It isn't. "
Some people so post spam, as to agitate the author. Giving the author rights to delete comments on their post allows them to delete spam from it, to keep a clean post.
"Deleting comments should be a power that is only given to moderators and the actual author of the comment, not to the author of the submission the comments are posted on. "
If the power goes only to mods, if there happens to be a time where there is too much spam because there are only so many mods, people will just delete the post itself, leaving the ones who gave good feedback sitting there upset.
Other than those two issues addressed, I agrre with you fully and hope to see this idea go big one day.
