Distance Of Darkness

"Mom, when will dad come home?", Steve asked, only five years old.

"Soon honey, daddy has to take double time today." Enna replied, who was Steve's mom.

The two waited for Steve's dad to come home from mining work. The family liked to avoid eating until every single member of the family came home. The time ticked as they waited, little Steve was reading his survival book his dad had given him for a present. After thirty minutes or so, the door finally opened.
"Dad, you're home!", Steve said happily.
He hugged his father while his mom kissed her husband on the cheek. Enna got delicious cooked pork with a few pieces of bread and set it on the table.
"I'm starving!", said Steve picking up his food.
"Well, I am too kiddo.", his dad said, smiling.

The cheerful family finished their food and did their hobbies, Steve read, his mom did her dinner exercise, and his dad read with Steve. When their golden clock struck the moon, they all said Goodnight and slept. This was mostly their daily routine, it happened almost day after day.

"Thunk, thunk!" other kids swung pickaxes and shovels, laughing. Little Steve did the same. They were on a gigantic digging site, where young children practiced doing jobs.
"Hey Steve!", it was his friend Trip.
"Hi Trip, what do you need?", Steve replied to his friend.
"Nothing, I just wanted to give you a present!" Trip said, then continued, " Here, it's a book with many different ways to make useful tools! I wrote it myself using the information my dad tells me!"

Steve jumped, said a huge thank you, and helped him mine as an appreciation. After what seemed like days but actually just an hour, the little kid ran home, sat down and opened the fresh leather book his friend had given him. With his great memory, Steve read slowly and carefully, placing each word in his brain, where every information Steve chose to remember better, was kept.

After reading the book, he placed it on his bookshelf, very sturdy even with the huge amounts of written items on it. Suddenly, explosions, arrows, moans, and hissing was heard. Steve jumped out of his seat and looked out the clear windows. There were huge mobs of monsters, zombies, spiders, creepers, and skeletons. They were all kept away from the village from huge light sources. For some reason, they were now invading through various heavy gates. Steve ran upstairs, yelling at his mom and dad. They instantly went under stairs, bringing large amounts of gear and food. They shut the iron trapdoor and told Steve to be quiet. The frightened child cowered in a small hole with his parents. The family listened as doors shattered, and blocks broke.

Finally, the mobs reached their house. Thumps and clacks were heard above. They heard a treacherous hiss and the heavy trapdoor blew open. Stone, bricks, dirt, and many other blocks flew across the room. The mobs advanced towards them, with their horrifying beady eyes.
   "Steve go!" his parent's yelled.
Pressing a hidden stone button, they pushed him in an iron cart and drove it away, leaving the two parents behind. Steve cried as he glanced at them for his last time. Spiders overtook them, and continued to chase poor little Steve. A speeding sharp arrow struck his flimsy cart. The passenger toppled over, dumping himself in an underground water source. He closed his eyes, this made himself think about a dark horizon, which someone couldn't ever see.

Shroooosh! Shroooosh! Water lapped a lonely man on the beach. His name was Steve, who was a survivor of a mob rampage. Who had lost his parents, home, friends, and almost his life. All the books he had owned, his love from his parents, all gone. Steve groaned, rolling over on wet grass. Dews dropped on his ragged aqua shirt, and dark pants. He opened his eyes and found himself staring at two eyes that were crossed. He stood up quickly, hitting himself on the pink creature. Groaning again, he stared at the pig, which was now turning its head side to side. Leaving the shore, he headed to a forest to gather wood. Behind him, the pig followed, it looked like he had a new friend.

Using what he remembered, he forged strong wooden tools, gathered apples, and collected resources. The pig and Steve shared apples. Steve wondered if the pig actually cared about him. Being as quick as possible, the two partners ventured on the awaiting land. They crossed hot deserts, lush forests, and dry grasslands. Once or twice, they stopped to drink from a pond or oasis, quenching their thirst. As they traveled, Steve spotted a group of mysterious structures. Steve and his companion marched toward the buildings, being alert. What he saw closely was a village! The houses had similar styles of building as his old town. This idea made small drops of tears form from Steve's block face. When he got to the village, he saw a great farm with various types of food including, carrots, potatoes, and wheat. Then, what he saw next made him surprised. Roaming around the village, were bald long-nosed men or woman. He couldn't tell what gender they were. He ran up to one and asked a question. All it did was nod and offer trades that were overpriced. He asked a question, trying to speak as clear and fluently as possible. Still, the villager nodded and offered trades. Giving up with a sigh, Steve took the house behind the villager and claimed it as his, for the villager didn't care.

Years passed, Steve followed his memories of his guides and studied the land. He was a strong warrior and took mobs one by one, with anger from his past. He was excellent in forging and mining. Often, he mourns about his parents. He had learned about two very dangerous worlds. One, he had named the Nether. It was full of steaming lava and angry creatures. The place had a gigantic fortress that roamed across the whole boiling living hell. Another, he called the End. It was an empty world, with black tall creatures. It had a leader which he named the Enderdragon, which he took one handed with his strength. He made many animal friends, for they were the only things he had that kept him company. Then on one day, an anvil toppled over, it had hit his head, damaging his brain and blinding him forever. He weeped and weeped. Unable to see, unable to navigate. Where he was surrounded by loneliness. It overtook him, dragging him into darkness. The feeling crept to him, like how the mobs crept to his village. Finally, the dread took him away, with his final breath, Steve said,

"What is the distance of darkness?"

The end.

Thank you for reading this short story. It took me quite a while to fully plan it out. Please support me by pressing the diamond! Bye :P

I don't get the tradition at the beginning.
Isn't it cruel to let your five year old kid stay up late as hay and starve until their father comes home?
You must be a dayum cruel mother to do so every single day.

Besides that, the kid is five years old so why can it read things as survival books already?
Where did Steve learn to read and why did he get a book as a birthday present if he's only 5 years old?

And also, assuming "the other kids" are Steve's age this pretty much sounds like a huge and cruel form of child labour.
I mean, who lets little kids work on a digging site.

Oh and if those kids practice jobs that early, how could Steve get the education required to read a book?
Learning to read that early is possible, learning how to dig or mine that early is possible aswell...but both things at the same moment? And one kid even learned how to read?! God, give those kids a childhood.

Besides those little details the story has another problem.
Steve is not a villager, but a human.
That means there must be a larger human population in a different village or town, which does not exist in the game.
There is nothing in the story that explains why humans are extinguished and why villagers are not.

Steve's motivations aren't clear aswell.
He has gotten away using a Minecart and the fact that the entire village is destroyed is not clear at all.
Why doesn't he try to search for his home village or some other place to live in the end?

And never forget, he is 5 years during the entire story or at least there is no cut or point at which Steve ages.
So a five year old travels to the nether. fights the ender dragon, surives in the wild?
The entire story leaks logic and sense behind every single part of it.

Yeah I see. Thank you for letting me know. I'm not a very good writer honestly, but I do it as a hobby. I enjoy reading comments like yours. They help me out in planning out in another story, and what to keep in mind while writing. Again, thank you for your feedback and ideas. About the child work, yes that may seem harsh but they aren't actually forced to do it. I should state that in the story. It's more of a place to explore how it would be mining as a job. However, although I didn't say that they are forced to do it, I did say it was practice. This usually means it isn't as harsh and more of a experiment to them, or to see how it is. With the book, I will say yes, I didn't actually think about that. The age I wasn't really thinking, I meant to put how time passed, but I wasn't so sure how to put it went by. I couldn't actually put he was away for a month or years because he out, which meant he had no way to get any food. Perhaps you can help me with that? I can update it after the contest is over :3
