Alright, so almost anywhere you look on the internet where you can upload a minecraft texture pack, you will find an X-Ray one. The problem is, the twits who make them, and the players who download them do not realize that they do not really work.

What Is An X-Ray Texture Pack?
Well, that is a simple answer. An X-Ray texture pack is essentially a texture pack where every single terrain object besides ores has be re-textured to look like glass or be somewhat transparent. They are used in the place of X-Ray mods for the players who are unable to download them.

Why Don't They Work?
Well, that is very easy. X-Ray packs do not work because they are basically half glass-half normal blocks. When you re-texture a block to be transparent, it is still attempting to be non-transparent but since it is also basically glass, you can see through it still. When you surround an ore (lets say gold) with touching re-textured stone, it is still working as a normal stone block. It will not allow you to see directly behind it, so it is basically pointless. These types of packs no longer work. You will only see an endless amount of clear blocks unless of course you find a cave. The only good thing about an X-Ray texture pack is that you are able to find caves and lava pockets easily. Since they are still textured to appear as glass, they will show open spaces behind them. This means that they will show caves, but not ores (unless the ore is on the cave wall opposite of where you are).

The Verdict:
The verdict is, don't use an X-Ray texture pack. They don't work. All you are going to see is an endless amount of clear blocks and a few caves. They are completely useless unless of course you are looking for caves. There is no point in downloading or creating them. Don't believe me? Give it a try. Download one and see if it works.

But they can't erase them. The textures from, say stone, are still counted as a physical block. It won't show anything behind it.

i use a certain editer that will alow me too.

and plus if the glass thing were true,u can only see 1 glass even if there is more glass behind/under it ;)

glass is seen as a seperate type of block. Its seen as a transparent block. Transparent blocks have seperate properties from every other type of block. Water is a transparent block also.

There are a few out there that work, but I find it highly unlikely that it actually shows the ores through blocks  that are, lets say, retextured stone. Are you sure there isn't something else installed?

They only work for caves, but it doesn't work for ores surrounded by stone

Its very rare if you find one and when you do, they usually have some sort of modification that usual ones do not have.

I always thought x-ray mods/texture packs were just ruining the fun of minecraft. The objective is to find ores, not press a button and see all of them.

this is true. there was this one time when i was heading towards diamonds using the AVO x-ray texture pack when suddenly, while i'm digging straight down, i ended up finding a vein of 8 diamonds, but i couldn't see it because it was surrounded by stone, so it was just luck!

If it does work, that is very rare and will only happen most likely 1/1000 packs or more out there.

There is only 2 transparent blocks glass and glass pane.So you can re-place everything with glass and see ores easily.I think this should work.

No. Just because a block doesn't have transparent textures doesn't mean it isn't.
TNT is transparent.
So are mob spawners, glowstone, iron bars, fences, anvils, even enchanting tables, half-slabs, end portal frames and a heap of other blocks.

No it wouldnt. You can't replace every block with glass. You can only change their textures. And since those blocks are meant to be non-transparent none of them would function like glass so it would be pointless anyways.

I've seen a few and used them when I was new to Minecraft. Some do work but you need torches to see the ore which is bull.

yep. They don't light up the area usually unless the creator went into the light settings.

I think spotting the caves is quite useful

And I thought this was what X ray texture pack intended to do

Not really. Most make them only to find ores.

I thought their point was to make it easier to find caverns so that we could spot ores in there. Well I haven't read all the descriptions of all x ray texture packs so I can't say anything but. At least that is how I use it.

That is the only useful feature. Most creators have a crazy delusion that all ores will be visible. There is also the fact that many servers do not appreciate those kinds of texture packs.

The only good thing is that your can find a cave near bedrock, witch MIGHT have diamonds, even though you can't see them. Useful? NO
