Full Written Review

A true minecraft classic, the original Survival Games published by Vareide remains both an icon and a favorite pastime even to this day. While it may not have been the first hunger games type map, it still remains a pioneer that paved the way and shaped the template for many more maps to come. All this makes it one of the best and most iconic Minecraft survival games maps to date.

All nostalgia aside, this map is a very well made map. It mimics the popular book/movie The Hunger Games in that 24 players compete in a massive arena to the death. Last one standing wins. It seems simple enough but the mapmakers were sure to go above and beyond this notion and truly make this an original project.

Aesthetically, The Survival Games won't dazzle or take your breath away at first glance. In fact, it almost feels like a naturally generated forest world with a few ruins added in here and there. The small generated structures are well built, and the landscape is smooth enough, but the selling point lies the small details of this map. Every once and a while, you may see something of interest in the distance. This will entice your curiosity enough to go investigate only to find a puzzle with a hidden reward inside of it. These little moments is where the map excels. Its simply never gets old, even if the landscape is a bit uninteresting in it of itself.

The world is big but never to the point where you are aimlessly walking around in wait for a player to slay. It seems to capture the same feel as the Hunger Games movie does in that you are constantly alert of your surroundings in fear another player may be near. That is a special feeling and one that few survival games maps tend to have.

Of course, the main reason you want to play this map is to just have a fun time with friends. If that is the case, this map is definetely for you. Once you start the game, you will find yourself looking for chests and secrets most of the time, and hunting/running from other players the smaller part of the time. It creates a great balance of fun and tense that is sure to excite even the most seasoned minecraft players.

Overall, The Survival Games is a great map that excels with it's superb gameplay and balance. It truly did pave the way for years to come for other survival games maps and even to this day, remains an iconic, nostalgic image of games we know and love today.
