This is a response to Mama Carole's Epic Rant

For those that are wondering about yon old days, I remember when I could read every single post on the entire forums, and for several months including before I was a moderator, I read every post on the entire forum and the number of posts that needed moderation was nearly 0. I think that I was a moderator for only a month or two before the posting volume became too large for me to keep reading it all, and at that point there was also a shift from useful information into the drivel that we see today. There have been I think 10 or 20 new boards created for the forums, and about half of those is to section off a portion of the spam. Things like the Hamachi sub-section in the forums, the Herobrine forum, and games areas among others.

I remember when I helped create a server that was open to all members on PMC and a great number of the community was active on that server. Now, I would not even think twice about telling 95% of you that I would never allow you on my server because of the attitude and immaturity that I see. For anyone that wants some fun numbers, my whitelist is not much bigger than my banlist, and 95% of that banlist are people that have never even been on my server because they could not follow the simple instruction of "PM, not comment".

While I am sorry that some of us Moderators that are older than the age of majority may seem cynical, rude, or overly sarcastic, it is because we have seen this community transform from a harmonious beacon of Minecraft Creativity to an island of harmony surrounded by a sea of strife. I do not want PMC to have an island of calm in the storm of the Minecraft community, I want PMC to be an island of calm within the storm of crap that this community has.

There are three main problems that I see that are causing harm to the Planet Minecraft community. I would say that 90% or more of the problems on PMC are a lack of nrespect and courtesy between members both to each other and to nthemselves. Unfortunately when people have the illusion of being nanonymous and never needing to see the people that they are talking to, nthey are willing to do things that they would not even think of. My hopen is that people will think of others and overcome these urges. An nexample is my desire to log on to every server that offers free op as a nselling point and use the op powers to turn the server off. I do not do nthis because I know that I represent PMC as one of the moderators and I nhope that the server owners will grow to do something better in the nfuture.

Another problem that plagues the community is the theft nthat goes on where people take skins, textures, and other things and npost them for their own recognition because people do not seem to want nto share in another persons accomplishment, they want all the glory for nthemselves. Some of this comes from people simply not knowing that it isn not right, like the people that use the skin parts pickers to assemble nskins instead of creating them from scratch, and the other people are ndoing it simply because they want someone to like them. One example nagain with me, is the fact that I used to have the highest voted projectn on all of PMC, which was my Moria project. When some of the projects nthat hold incredible ratings now were posted, I felt sad for a moment, nbut instead of wanting to rage against the projects that took my place nat the top, I was glad to see something of such quality and it made me nwant to make my project even better. As Block_Fortress stated so well, "Get better, not bitter".

The last thing that I think nthat we can do is to bring a certain level of maturity to the community.n Keep the funny fart jokes to yourself and leave the spam at home. I nknow that most younger users are still in the stage in life where n'trolling' is funny, but if we can help them step up, we can not only nhelp them here, but later on (think of how important it is to be nliterate when you go get a job).

With these issues and potential solutions in mind, let us band together and work towards bringing this community to its former diamond days of glory when all were treated fairly by their fellows and moderators were not needed. My hand is extended, will you take it and join me?

You see. the problem is, this is a public forum/board. The public majority are mostly trolls/whatever else,
Private forums/boards are created for the people who figure out how to enter them, for what they like. Such as minecraft. Privates are started off the best from the minority in publics though, so yeah

Anyway. i support this call

Im with you Zar but some things are just making pmc not fun anymore (No more down voting) since its been gone it will be harder to tell if your creations are good or not {[EXAMPLE: Say i upload a project and its not very good and im wanting to know if people think it is good or not, the upvote/downvote system helped this situation allot. Now people will leave rude comments that can hurt others and breaking their spirits to just try harder next time. The upvote/downvote system was just a simple anonymous person giving you their opinion and they could leave a comment if they wanted to be noticed.

Then you have "Trollers" ,trollers should be banned or get a permanent bad reputation that disables them from leaving comments or upvoting and downvoting. It may go slow at first but with the supporters of this good community "I believe we can pull through."

This is a community that should have a wide range of options to share their opinions and yes Zar that was in the good old days where trolls were mature and didn't screw everything up for the other 50% of this good community.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the thought that the younger generation might simply view things differently from the others. I would know, being among their number. Perhaps it's because I am at the higher end of 'young,' but I've been told I am mature for my age (not to 'toot my own horn' so to speak). I'll admit, I'll engage sometimes in the drivel of the forums (not necessarily this one, as I am brand new), but very rarely, and often my contributions are aimed at the hard task of correcting the denizens' spelling, grammar, and overuse of caps-locking. As one fellow ranter to another, I applaud you for maintaining a beacon of hope and sanity in an increasingly insane world.

Well put, Zar. I remember one night SoulStealer (Who now that I think about it, I havent seen him or kacboy lately at all!) signed off the chat room, and before he logged off my server which we was simultaneously playing, said, "I swear, spend an hour on that chat room and the overall IQ of it drops by a point every time." I didn't take the full force of his words until now how much I realize he was right, not just about the chat room, but unfortunately about the entire forums. I'm without question on your side with this, and do my best one post at a time to rectify the situation, (Oh how I've noticed I use that word so much xD).

Great blog post, I for one feel that if I act immature and douchebaggy over the internet, I would gradually begin to act like that in real life. That's why I always act like I would in real life to prevent me from turning over to the "dark" side XD. Nice blog again, I wish I could have enjoyed the times where PMC was free of the current litter and people who think it's "cool" to just steal or remake skins or projects. Also I am about to post my first project up soon, making the finishing touches and polishing it up to ensure it shall be a proper project instead of a 5 minute project or just a copy of a project =) Makes me feel good that there are people who believe there's a chance to fight the trolls who made PMC into what it is today, Thanks again Zara.

"While I am sorry that some of us moderators that are older than the age of majority may seem cynical, rude, or overly sarcastic..." Love this line. I don't bother to read the forum's any more. It's become to full of the "rate the person above you" crap. Can I answer "childish" to all? Maybe we need an adult section? well that's not going to happen. I can understand what you mean Zar, but I think the other's are right. As the users become younger and respect comes with age - Loosing battle springs to mind.

Zaralith

Simply because the battle seems hopeless, does not mean you give up the fight. While equating this to books and movies is silly, if Pug had given up on Kelewan when he was captured and made a slave, he would not have been able to save Midkemia by becoming the most powerful wizard in the universe and a member of the Assembly of Kelewan. The men and others guarding Helm's deep or Minas Tirith would not have received those reinforcements had they simply given up and died before they could get there. As for getting a mature topics section, the suggestion has been made and some of the mods agree on creating such, including myself. I think it may be a little silly to segregate the community into areas, but providing the children with a place to play while the adults talk at the table is a good idea that people use in real life, why not here.

Nothing is ever solved by admitting defeat. If you do such, they have won, and do we really want the tides to sweep away our sanctum? I think not, so I for one will build high walls and defend them to the last. Maybe it is not a war that can be 'won' but that does not mean that we need to lose. Simply standing our ground is victory enough to see another day.

If you get enough support from people willing to put in the time and effort then great, lots of members are beginning to get utterly sick of it. I think big changes are necessary though.

I suggest removing all the forum spam areas off the most recent 20 posts list and employing some more forum moderators.

I would say that 90% or more of the problems on PMC are a lack of respect and courtesy between members both to each other and to themselves. Noting this, I sometimes tell people that hand out free OP to not do that, because obviously they are only doing that so players join faster, or because they want to lean on someone to help them make the server, (Admit it, we've all been in that situation, whether a server or a school project) but what I tell them to do, is make the page just say "Server name" so the link stays like that forever, even if they change the topic title (As "shadows of gazamo" for example the link is still shadowville, medieval RP) and then make the title say, "Looking for staff," as that way more people will look at the server, and only people truly worthy of the staff position will apply themselves and succeed at becoming staff on your server. (Typing this, I think of Mjolnir65, who even though he is merely a teenager, applies himself to helping my server more than anyone I have ever seen of any age, and Rsos4953, a student in college who in between classes skyped through his phone just to help out.) It's people like that you need to, and will find as friends, and as co-staff.

My server is not large enough to warrant more than just me running things, but if or when I get that sort of traffic, I will need to find some good admins. I would love to ask for any tips you have on the search and selection process, though I don't know if I would be able to run the server effectively with traffic that requires that many people.

Po1ntBlank

Well, frankly, what I did, was I just made a server (brand new) that said Looking for staff, then I "interviewed" a few people that applied (except Rsos, he joined the "real" server the first day i made it, and caught my eye with his extensive knowledge on plugins) I asked them to help me with the server, and most of them just wanted to join and play on it for the fun, and the ones I look back that were admins, etc. never asked. They truly earned it, and that's all you can ask for, is someone determined enough to work for something on a server that may or may not be exteremely popular. But I ask them about it, and they say they saw something in my server they hadnt seen in many, nothing to do with the server, but Rsos and my pure dedication for the players of the server, and they say thats frankly what attarcted them to the server.

Anyway, the interview asked for people who were 18, or could pass for it by maturity, and someone named Mjolnir blatantly said he was only 14, so he would like to be a mod. Just the pure honesty really caught my attention, so I made him a mod pretty quickly after hearing some other things. I then asked later if he had any knowledge on configuring plugins, and I asked him to configure Falsebook for me, he said he didnt really know, but would try, and sure enough, 15 minutes later he said he thinks he figured it out, and a perfectly configured version of 2-3 plugins I asked him were in an email. That week I promoted him to Admin, then HeadAdmin, then Co-Owner along with Rsos.

I know this might not answer your question, but frankly, Im somewhat okay with that. If you EVER need someone to help you, gimme a PM, and I can "get the gang back together" and we can see what we can do. Mjolnir65 (Magic98Danny on minecraft) is a truly hardworking dedicated person to any server he helps with at all, and Rsos4953 (same as on minecraft) has a large amount of extensive knowledge with plugins, and general server setup/troubleshooting, and as a college student he is, I reccomend you talk to him a little bit.

But to answer your original question, just ask a little by little to random players to see if they can help, and I always look for the ones that aren't to eager, aren't too cocky, and will just press themselves to do whatever they can to help you. I sometimes use a friends account and make a fake server just to find people that know what they are doing, and get attracted to those "LOOKING FOR STAFF" posts :)

Sorry if I didnt truly answer your question, and sorry for my poor grammar/spelling tonight, its 1AM and I cant sleep T_T If you want to know anything else, just ask :) Im here to help!
