Fix: Can't login to minecraft

This gets asked quite a bit on the forums and the solution is pretty simple. This allows you to check whether the minecraft login servers are down and check if your account was stolen. 

It's because the login servers can't cope with the amount of people playing minecraft. Keep trying to connect and you can usually get in fine, however if you can't then the minecraft login server is probably down or you account has been stolen.

1 Go to https://www.minecraft.net/ and try to login to your account on the website. If you can login then there isn't a problem with your account or the login servers. Just try again.

Can't access minecraft.net?

You are having connection issues with minecraft.net. Refresh the page couple of times, and then try below:

2 Go to http://help.mojang.com/ and downornot.com/minecraft.net

This website checks minecraft.net using many different servers located around the world. This gives you a very good picture over whether minecraft servers are down, experiencing very high load, or are absolutely fine. If several of the servers couldn't get to minecraft.net and the others had high pings bigger than 1500ms then service will be intermittant because the servers are overloaded.

If minecraft.net is down:

Try again in 10-15 minutes.

If they are experiencing high load:

Keep trying, you will eventually get in.

If minecraft.net is fine:

You or your ISP is having troubles connecting to minecraft, try in 30-60 minutes.

Invalid username/password?

You CAN get onto the website, but it keeps saying you have an invalid username/password?

Someone guessed or more likely someone cracked your password and is now using your account. Go to minecraft.net/resetpassword and enter your username to have reset instructions emailed to you. Recover your password, but this time choose a more secure password:

Why your account was stolen

The reason your account was stolen is most likely because you chose a short, easy to crack password. Choose a password that is at least 8 characters long with at least 2 numbers. Do not choose all numbers or easy, common words. DON'T EVER choose the same password as your email address.

BAD examples:

minecraft99, dave1997, 372844

It is ideally best to choose a random selection of numbers and characters:

example: k3hs8ne7

Don't want it to happen again?

Always check the URL address bar at the top of the window, if it doesn't say 'https://www.minecraft.net/' then it is a site that looks the same but will send your login details to someone else. NEVER use this site, ALWAYS login via the official server address. This however this IS NOT completely foolproof, the only way to be sure is to manually enter the URL yourself - never trust links from others!

Do not used cracked/hacked clients, these often have password stealers in. Sure they work fine, but they also steal your account, which means you could be banned on many servers you have never been on. They can also lead to you being globally banned from all servers using mcbans (http://mcbans.com/).
