Great plugins to put on your server
A list of great plugins to improve your server and make it more fun for all your players!
If you have any plugin suggestions, please leave a comment!
Anti hacking/griefing/cheating/spamming plugins are covered in proper detail here:
Useful standard commands:
All the essential basics you need like setting home, spawn point, whispering etc.
Nolagg helps reduce a lot of lag and loading issues. Very useful.
WorldEdit is used to easily cut, copy and paste blocks, remove lava, regenerate terrain, restore backups, a lot of stuff. WorldGuard can be used to protect areas, mob spawning, pvp areas, stop fire spread, tnt, lava, water, creeper explosions and more.
Door/Chest locking protection:
Pretty much essential to stop people stealing stuff. If you don't lock it down, people will take it! Easy to use.
Needed to add colours to chat, player prefixes etc.
Optional: I'm fond of mChannel because you can switch between global and local chat, and make your own chat channels. Helps stop the chat window getting too full of people talking.
To restrict who can and can't use certain commands.
Cracked servers only:
Cracked servers allow anyone to login as any player. This puts a password to each players name to prevent this.
An economy plugin (Needed)
Needed to implement a currency on your server. You can apply charges to using certain commands like /tp or /heal or similar. Check the plugins you want to use support the economy plugin you want to use. Iconomy is very popular, but there are alternatives.
Other plugins to pay wages are available but jobs is probably the best: you can join jobs and earn money by being a woodcutter, miner, fisherman, builder, hunter etc. You can even make your own jobs!
Allows people to buy their own protected land rather than having your mods/admins going round wasting time having to protect people's houses. Very useful.
Used to setup shops so people can sell their own items they don't need and promote the economy on your server. Lots are available here are a few: ChestShop is a simple shop plugin where people can buy items from a sign attached to a chest. Showcase is a very neat plugin that allows you to showcase a floating version of your item, and has a better interface than ChestShop. Dynshop offers a dynamic global economy, based on supply and demand.
Give rewards/penalties for killing players and mobs, and also change the drops you can get
PvP, PvM, Capture the flag, different classes. Lots of different possibilities, and some of them interface with economy plugins too.
A novel fun game you can play against other players, you have to climb up a maze-like tower of wool, trying to find your way up before the other players. Check out the videos to get more of an idea.
If you haven't heard of spleef, go look it up! This allows you to regenerate the arena after each round, allow you to pay to enter and win cash for winning, and give messages when people win or are knocked out.
A cool little idea to entertain your players. Allows you to spawn a random treasure chest underground. A server message is broadcasted and then players can rush towards the location, by using /hunt to find the direction and then digging to find it. Allows you to customise rewards.
Used to make a more RPG-like experience: get experience and level up from cutting trees, mining, fighting etc. Fun even if you aren't an RPG server!
Adds magic books, and spells. A little hard to get the hang of initially, but very fun.
Basically allows you to setup towns, cities, empires for people to socialise, PvP and live together. Useful for RPG or PvP servers, and incorporates economy and area protection.
Adds NPCs to the game - showcase your staff members, make shopkeepers, lots of possibilities.
Useful if you want to have a creative and a survival world, or just play custom maps on the same server.
Also consider using a different inventory for different worlds:
Gives a fake welcome message from a few random players currently on the server. Makes new people feel welcome!
Adds funny death messages whenever someone dies - also gives a good laugh when someone gets PVP'd with a feather or similar. Also allows you to save your inventory in a chest if you die.
Allows you to summon mobs behind a player, even works for doing it to every player on the server!
VoxelSniper is a powerful plugin that has many features WorldEdit doesn't cater for. Also has a lite version to give to players, in case they cause too much damage.
A very clever plugin that enables portal guns, emanicipation grids, jump pads and blue/orange gel. The impressive bit is it doesn't involve any client mods, everything is handled server-side.
If you come back to this page and don't want to search through for which new plugins have been added, here is an update log. (Use CTRL+F to find)
