Note: Most servers might have a policy of only well known friends, or family can be staff, so keep that in mind.
1. Be active, and friendly in the community of your server, You notice staff members on PMC are on almost everyday. Servers like active staff members. What's the point of having staff that's never online? Be Helpful, if someone has a problem, help them out. Rather your staff or not.
2. Be mature, and use common sense. Some servers will say "You can only be staff if you're over [15, 18. 20] But honestly, it's all about maturity, Some 18 year old's act like 10 year old's. So don't spam, or throw tantrums, if you make an odd puberty joke like a 12 year old would do, you probably just lost all of the slim chances you had.
3. Don't be annoying. Spamming the chat with "pls pls let me be staff" will 99% of the time lead to kick, or ban, and just makes you look like a megalomaniac 9 year old who wants power. Yes Ranks are cool, getting [Mod] or [Helper] in front of your username is fun, and great! But with that prefix/suffix is more than just a rank, you'll have a job to do.
4. Make sure you can do the job, and prove it. Moderating is one the toughest things to do, and can actually cause emotional pain. Moderating in general is hard, they have to look at gruesome photos, tolerate bad behavior, and so much more. But maybe moderating isn't your thing, what other skill can you provide the server? Maybe you can make Plugins, or you're a FANTASTIC builder, Prove it! A lot of Builders on servers are discovered at the simple "Creative" Section, a server member sees the amazing work, and goes "Wow... Want to do this for our sever[Spawn, quests, anything]?". Plugin people (like me) Might have to dig. Usually if a server needs a plugin made, they'll create a forum post requesting it. so be actively looking for that.
This might not instantly get you the moderating role you wanted, but it's a step in the right direction.
