Alright. So today, I'll be showing you how to build modern circles and spheres in Minecraft. Nowadays, most people who try to build circles for the first time end up with something like this.
Obviously, this isn't a circle. It's a diamond. But that's a very common mistake, so it doesn't mean you'd suck at making circles. This is how an appropriate circle should look. Note the difference.
But making good circles is way easier than you think. Study this 1/4 picture of the circle from above.
This is the most important thing to remember. The diamond had a straight diagonal vein connecting to the base sides. Circles have a round vein. Look at the differences in the pictures below. From left to right, the circle edge and the diamond edge.
So just by remembering this, you can easily make circles. However, spheres are much more difficult, so I've put together the guide for spheres to be as easy as possible. Note that before you do any sphere-building, you must have mastered the art of circles.
I'll be making a 15x15x15 sphere. So first, I'll make a 15x15 circle, but it has to be made vertically, like this.
The next step is to thicken the circle. Listen to this carefully. As you can see in the picture, every base side of the circle is 5 blocks long. So we would thicken the circle 5 blocks. It is a good idea to leave the middle of the circle the same, so that it would be easier to know where the very center of the circle is.
Alright. Now, before I show you the next step, let me ask you this: Have you ever seen a drawing of the full inside and outside look of a sphere?
Well that should tell you exactly why this is the next step: Add an opposite layer.
And if for some reason you don't get it, I don't know how else to explain it. On another subject, take a look at it from these angles. You can see that it's actually starting to become a sphere.
The next step is to remove the edges of the corners from every base of the sphere, like this.
We're almost done. Now we're building another layer on the sphere, but this time horizontally.
This last step is easy. We'll be filling in those 8 corners that are left from the sphere. I couldn't come up with a good way to explain it, so I've put together these pictures.
Voila!
Now after you apply this same thing to every other corner, you'll have a beautiful sphere.
Basically, this is all you have to do:
- Make a circle facing vertically.
- Thicken the circle to whatever the lengths of the bases are.
- Make another circle inside it facing the sides.
- Remove the edges of every base of the sphere.
- Make another circle inside it, same thickness, but horizontally.
- Fill the corners with a 1/4 diamond shape. The size depends on the thickness.

Q: You know we can just use MCEdit, right?
A: People tell me this all the time in the comments. Yes, it would be a whole lot easier to use MCEdit or any other world-editing program, but you're not able to use it on a SMP server, and some people don't know how or are unable to download it.
Q: What about cones?
A: Cones should be easy to figure out. Start out with a horizontal circle, stack blocks in the middle as high as you want your cone to be, and keep adding smaller circles underneath it (or on top if your cone's base is facing down) until it reaches the tip of the stack of blocks. A bit hard to explain without pictures, but you can study this ice cream cone I made to help you out.

A: I never learned this from anybody. I learned the flat circles pretty fast, and I just studied the spheres and eventually figured out an easy way to make them.

A: Exactly the same as a sphere: Start out with a vertical circle, just stretch the length as much as you want. The main difference is that since the length and the heights are different, you'll decide how thick you want your oval to be yourself, and it also changes how the corners are formed.
