Since Minecraft 1.3.1 was released, people have been asking how to disable cheats for their puzzle maps, adventure maps, etc. I found a way to disable cheats that I use for my Minecraft Puzzle maps. First, download this program called NBTEdit. I did NOT make NBTEdit, copyboy did.

DOWNLOAD LINKS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE.
1. Extract it with winrar.
2. Open NBTEdit and click File > Open
3. On the top, it should have a picture of a folder beside the (<) (>) buttons, double click it and the text beside the folder will be highlighted blue.
4. Delete the blue highlighted text and type in %appdata% and press enter.
5. Click on the .minecraft folder and click saves.
6. Double click the map you want to disable cheats on and click "level.dat"
7. Under root will say Data: __ entries. Double click on that and you should see "allowCommands" and alot of other things like gametype, spawn x y z and other stuff.
8. Click on "allowCommands" and change the value to 0.
9. Save it,Now go to File > Open again and click on your map again and do the same with level.dat_old.
10. Exit NBTEdit and your ready to go!
NOTE: When you change gamemode, make sure that it is not creative mode or else it will stay creative without cheats so change to survival mode (When you go in singleplayer it will still say creative but it's not) and then disable cheats.
GAMETYPES (Ingame with commands only.)
gametype 0: survival
gametype 1: creative
gametype 2: adventure

IN GAME WITH CHEATS: /gamemode 2 = cannot break blocks. Only open chests, activate levers, buttons, etc
You CANNOT change the gamemode through NBTEdit. You will need to enable cheats, change the gamemode ingame, and then disable cheats.
SET SPAWN:
In your map, go to where you want to set your spawn point, press f3 and write down your x y z numbers.
Go to NBTEdit and set the xyz to the xyz you wrote down.

When I opened the level.dat file, it gave me an error saying "Error when loading the file

Unknown TagId'11'.

For detailed information see error.log'

I tried a ton of times and the error log says:

Oh. and by the way, the version is 1.6.4 and I have the PortalGun mod installed, which is most likely a reason :/

theres a simple ingame way to do it though. Launch a world with cheats disabled and open it to lan with cheats enabled. Cheats will then be enabled for as long as it is open.

And i know a way to change cheats on and off without leaving the game. XD AND I Ain't telling anyone :)

Well actually, you can change the gamemode of a map. With the new version of NBTEdit, the NBTExplorer, you will see "Gametype".

so i have done what you have said and it shows that it works but when i enter the world again the cheats are still enabled. I started a world in creative to just get my home base set up and wanted to switch it to survival. the game says that it is in survival and cheats are off but in game says its still in creative with cheats. can you help?
Edit Reply Delete
you have to start the world in survival and turn off cheats or else you will be in creative. Try restarting your minecraft (unless you already did). if it still doesnt work then what i would do is go in game and type /gamemode 0 and then exit the map and exit game, turn cheats off, and go back to your map. If that doesnt work, make sure you applied the settings to both level.dat and level.dat_old. and change yout gamemode to 0 through nbt edit instead of ingame. Tell me if it works or not.

I'm sad. I really want to publish my adventure map, although it's only 10% done. Of course, cheats are enabled, and I really should get them off. I probably could use command blocks to lock someone onto a gamemode and stuff like that, but /time would get to be a problem, and so would /tp.I've used NEINedit (the Mac version of NBTedit) before, so I know it works. First, I closed Minecraft to be safe. I opened my level.dat and changed the "allowCommands" to 0. I then did the same in my level.dat_old, and I saved them both. However, when I reopened Minecraft it still said "Survival Mode, Cheats", and upon opening the world I was in creative mode and had cheats. When I reopen the level.dat, allowCommands was set to 1 again.Next, I looked at the comment I'm obviously replying to. I tried /gamemode 0 ingame, but that didn't work. I tried putting myself on survival in NEINedit, but that didn't work either. With the quality of this article, I was truly convinced that this would work. Please tell me which one of these I should try next, along with any tips you may know:
  • Create a brand new world with survival and cheats off, then change the region folder out
  • Go to a friend's PC to try out NBTedit
  • Try some kind of preset level.dat
  • Modify a different file in the world's folder
  • Other
In the meantime, I'll either delay publishing my world or I'll simply have to trust people to not use cheats, as the map is incomplete anyway. Please respond. Thank you for this article.

OH i found the actual problem. Changing the gamemode through NBTEdit will not work so you allow cheats, change the gamemode ingame and then disable cheats.
Edit Reply Delete
I say try re-downloading NBTEdit with the new version I uploaded. (Credit goes to copyboy for creating NBTEdit) I think the problem is that that the NBTEdit I uploaded was outdated (It was for 1.3.2) so now I uploaded to NBTEdit for 1.4.6 - 1.4.7.

Yay, it worked! Thank you thank you thank you! I changed the gm ingame before, but after downloading your link to NBTedit, and getting to a PC, it worked! Thank you so much, I can now publish my adventure map, which is here by the way: (not published yet)
Once again thank you, and to everyone else, this guy is awesome!
