This will show you how to make a picture look like it was lying around in a damp basement for a long while. If you haven't already, install Paint.Net (from getpaint.net) and run it. It's free software, so don't worry about paying for it.
NOTE: Unless you don't want it to be shaded, use this template for #2: bit.ly/NcHb53
#! - Open the char.png you want to edit by going to file>open and browsing to it. Or just drag it to the open window. It will prompt you to choose to open or add a new layer. Open it.
#@ - Download Kefka's template from http://www.planetminecraft.com/skin/shading-template-instant-shading-tutorial/. You can also use an alternate one, also by Kefka:http://www.planetminecraft.com/skin/shading-template-2---add-shading-to-your-skin-in-one-easy-step/
## - Press F4. A popup will appear. Under Blending, Change the mode to overlay. You can leave everything else the way it is.
#$ - Now open the Template.png as you did to char.png, except this time, don't click Open. Click Add Layer.
#% - If you completed Step 4 and 3 correctly, you should have a faded char.png. But it looks a little odd. So now, we'll change even more stuff
#^ - Under Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast, You see two sliders. Pretty obvious what those are for. I recommend a brightness between -30 through -40 and a contrast between 70 - 85
#& - Though that's the main stuff, you can also go to adjustments and try out the other stuff. Like all the way at the end, sepia makes it look like really old, yellowish paper and hue/saturation also has some things for you to try. Whatever looks good. There's also an effects drop down menu. There's a motion blur, which you can use to shade it in without hassle (experiment with it) and much more other stuff.
Also, if you want to see befores and afters, here they are: before, after. I actually discovered this accidentally. I tried using Kefka's method of instant shading and ended up with a faded-version of my skin. Check it out here.
