Introduction

Ever since the summer of 2014 (when Mojang changed their EULA to its current iteration), server owners have ignored Mojang’s warnings of enforcement. As you may know, Mojang has started blocking servers that don’t comply with their EULA. All I can say is, they had it coming for over two years now. Though, I hope this blog will help encourage you to comply.

Why You Should Comply

When you purchased Minecraft, you had to explicitly state that you agreed to Mojang’s terms, and the EULA is a component of said terms. It doesn’t matter if you approve or disapprove of these terms (or Mojang’s future modifications), if you own a Minecraft account, you must abide by Mojang’s terms.

What Happens If You Don’t Comply

Initially, an enforcement representative at Mojang will send you emails about your server’s donation store with information about what needs to be changed and a deadline. If for some reason you decide not to comply within the timeframe specified, Mojang will add your server to their server blacklist. Players on Minecraft versions 1.7.2 and on won’t be able to connect to your server if it’s on the blacklist.

How to Comply

In order for your server to comply, you must ensure all donation perks offered don’t affect gameplay for any individual player. You may, however, offer server-wide perks that affect every player’s gameplay.

There are a variety of possible ways to comply, but the most common compliant donation incentives are “cosmetic” perks: extras that change a player’s appearance instead of changing aspects of gameplay. Another possible compliant route is Pay2Play, where players must pay money to access your server at all.

Best Way to Approach Compliance

To make donations that comply, it’s best to treat your donations as real donations. People should donate because they want to support a cause, not for something in return. Servers can still offer perks, they just have to make sure they meet the terms of the EULA.

Recommended Perks

Cosmetic perks that comply with the EULA:
  • Commands that don’t alter gameplay
  • Effect trails and other particles
  • Pets
  • Anything else that doesn’t enhance gameplay for a specific player

Here's a table of even more cosmetic perks with permission nodes for your convenience:

Perks That Aren’t Allowed

The EULA states that the following donation perks are not allowed:

Banned Perks
  • Capes
  • Kits (anything that gives items to a specific player)
  • In-game currency
  • Experience points
  • Extra homes
  • Staff ranks (including /op)
  • Changing weather
  • Changing time
  • Flight
  • Creative mode (or any other gamemode)
  • God mode
  • Instant-healing (with /heal or instant-feeding with /feed)
  • Inventory clearing
  • Extra inventory space
  • Anything else that affects gameplay of a specific player

I'll edit this post later with more information. :)

Doesn't make sense to me, EULA is to stop "pay to win" but getting creative mode isn't WINNING, never once in the game do you get creative mode after beating the final boss.

It's an unfair advantage. Basically, you're not allowed to sell gameplay mechanics, and creative mode certainly is a gameplay mechanic.

So I have a complicated question, and I'm not sure it's easily answered.

What if I were to create a forum specifically for people who have donated, and from there we hold contests with prizes? Not everyone would be getting an item, unless there were consolation prizes or something, so would that violate the EULA?

But this is for OP rank the ones who don't like the staff looking at what they got but again that's kinda infair maybe make it so they could buy the rank or just use ingame money to buy the perm. And essentials.invsee.preventmodify is allowed has it has not gameplay effect untill staff takes a item that you did not get permission from before taken unless its a unclaim chunk

Does anyone know if Slimefun abuse EULA, I don't think it does but again Think it does has the Explosive pickaxe destroys 3 by 3 blocks and drops them meaning it does change the gameplay and I think the plugin it self does change the gameplay cause it gives you armor that allows you to fly but could I maybe give player permissions to be able to use /enchant fly ? Would that be abusing EULA? Has it would be a custom enchantment that is not even in Minecraft well I guess that would be like saying I made a plugin that allows you to break more then 1 block with a pickaxe only if you pay $1
for it.

Hey, I was thinking of starting a server but I won't be able to pay for it for a while without donations, therefore I am looking for eula compliant donation packages to add. I was hoping you could tell me wether it would be allowed to sell a rank wich gives you access to a kit wich gives you stuff you can obtain in game like iron armour?

That falls under selling kits, which isn't allowed.
