I'm pretty much just writing this blog so that people stop asking me for help with comics and so that some people pick up a thing or two from this tutorial! :)
OH! JUST TO BE CLEAR! I'm not gonna teach you how to actually draw, and please don't buy one of those "how 2 do the cartoons" books. I've owned like 7 of them and they've never helped me. I'm a self taught artist and I know it's hard to be that but it's way better and it helps you find your own style. :D
FIRST OF ALL:
It doesn't really matter if you can draw or not! I'm really tired of people telling me that they can't make comics because they can't draw! I mean look at Cyanide and Happiness the comics look like a 1st grader drew them! BUT, it's also a very succesful webcomic and people don't care about the art they like the stories because they're great and funny!
Okay, now that I got that out there let's get to the basics shall we?
Write your comic ideas down- I always think up of a lot of comics, so much that I always forget them! So I always write them down somewhere, on a piece of paper on Notepad on anything! Just as long as I remember it, it's very handy!
Thumbnails- I picked this up from Bryan Lee O'Malley. I make thumbnails to plan out panel layouts on the page. They're just sorta small and crudely drawn "comics". [Here's the thumbnail I used to make "How to build a Fireplace"] The red wiggly lines indicate where text is supposed to go. Think of thumbnails as sort of as a draft before you write/draw the final thing. Also pretty much nothing is written because I have all the script written down on Notepad!
Word balloons- You do know what word balloons are right? Those little balloons where the words are? Draw 'em. Without text bubbles your comic just looks lazy. Text should be clear (MS Paint has terrible text quality ), readable, not too big or too small, in some font that's easy to read. (I know Comic Sans is supposed to be used for comics but c'mon guys, that's not proffesional!)
Fonts I use to write in comics!
Backgrounds- May I make a suggestion? PLEASE DRAW THEM. Would you rather see a comic of Steve punching a tree in a FOREST, or would you rather see him punch a tree in an empty white space? I know, right? Backgrounds show where the character is and they're really important.
Read a lot of comics!- Yeah, you should really read like... a lot of comics, I read comics for 2 years before I actually started making them in 3rd grade. You'll learn lots of stuff from other comics.
That's all I've got to say! Best of luck when you start writing your Minecraft or non-Minecraft comics!
