Thanks for letting this get on the Popular Reel (1st time ever :D) Wish I knew how to take a webpage screenshot...
You may think that surviving is easy, right? All you have to do is build a dirt wooden house, grow some radioactive cauliflower wheat, maybe blow up mine some stuff? Well, you may or may not know, but a lot of things can go wrong. Here are 10 of the most common and hazard-causing things you can do in Minecraft, and should avoid, unless you're in Creative mode.
#10:
Bring pets mining.
Let's face it. Pets weren't meant to help you mine. Now you may think, 'Wolves can guard you from underground dangers!' True, but try making a bridge across a ravine filled with lava. One minute wolfy's there, and the next... Ploop! They're not the smartest of creatures, and can be a real hindrance to any expedition. Keep the canines (and felines) aboveground where they belong, at least until jeb allows them to hold tools.

Sprint-Jump when you have no food.
That's a great way to get yourself killed. it needlessly drains your hunger and causes you to be unable to recover or flee when there's a threat, and allows for carelessness. Even if you do have food, eating it for that reason is wasteful and slows you down for when you actually do need to run. Unless home is in sight, all you need to do is sprint or walk.

Frolic through forests, oblivious of your surroundings.
There are so many dangers in a forest, because A) mobs don't burn up underneath the trees, B) They are hidden better, and C) It's harder to see ravines. Try and pay attention to what you're doing while you're in a forest. You definitely don't want to die in a forest, because it is so hard to find your stuff again. Try chopping down a few trees in an area and establish some points of familiarity, in case you have to return there.

Build bridges in the middle of ravines that have lava in the bottom of them.
Don't try and be cool when you're exploring ravines. Be practical. Mobs can spawn pretty much anywhere underground, even in the smallest spaces. If a skeleton knocks you off your bridge, good chance you won't live to avenge the bone-bag. Build your bridges up against the wall of the ravine that has the fewest caverns. That way you have a lesser chance of being knocked off and, if you miss something below you, you can always make a bridge on the other side.
#6:
Close off a dungeon without lighting it and expect to be safe.
Mob spawners have a very large spawning range, usually including outside of the dungeon. Closing the dungeon off does not prevent the mobs from spawning. If you try this, you will usually forget about the incident and be bombarded with 4 zombies/skeletons/spiders. In order to be safe from them, you pretty much have to torch the spawner (which you should do anyway) or destroy it.
#5:
Fight in areas where water flows toward lava.
You know what I'm talking about. Where there's obsidian beneath the water, and you just can't reach the water source? Yeah, stay away from those. You can easily A) be swept into the lava by the current, or B) get knocked into the lava and be unable to climb out. If you do die on the water, your stuff will be carried into the lava. No questions asked. If you can't block up the water, just leave. LEAVE.

Go mining without extra wood.
Unless you have diamond tools or are skimming the surface for coal and iron, don't get deep without some backup wood. Your tools will break. Unless Notch blesses you with an Abandoned Mineshaft, you need wood to make it down there. Always bring at least another set of sticks (enough for another pickaxe) if you think your adventure will be short. Of course they almost never are, so bring about 20 planks to be safe. Your pickaxe doesn't make a great sword, and your sword makes an even worse pickaxe.

Romp around in the Nether aimlessly.
The Nether is a big place, and it's very easy to get lost, especially if you're looking for a nether fortress. You find some of the most valuable items there, so always make sure to know how to get back home. Compasses don't work in the Nether, so you're on your own. Make a trail of dirt or cobblestone leading from your portal to a familiar, nearby spot, such as a blaze spawner. Better safe than sorry!

Leave your back exposed.
This is a classic mistake everyone has made at some point of their career. Especially if the area is unlit, creepers can sneak up on you, as well as other groups of mobs, and both you and your diamonds are gone. This really shouldn't be a problem for mining most things, as they break pretty quickly, but with obsidian and large veins, you need to make sure that A) a light source is nearby, B) You're well armored and able to recover health, C) No mob spawners are nearby, and D) There's not lava underneath you. This is one of the most lethal and common mistakes, so be weary of it.

Dig straight down.
This is probably the most hilarious mistake people make. When you dig down, you have no way of know you've hit a ravine/dungeon/lava until you come in contact with it. Hopefully most of us here know that this is a very bad idea and it should be avoided at all costs. But if you feel the urge to dig down, try and do it in columns of two blocks or more, and always dig the block(s) you are not standing on first. Honestly, there's enough caverns around. Don't Do It!
