How to PvP and protect yourself:
Attacking:
To deal the most damage, try to use a ranged attack from a hard to spot or hard to access point. The best approach is to attack from a tower, with a bow at full draw. Make sure you do not miss your target! If you do, they can find your point from the position of the arrow! Another useful attack is strafing, shooting as fast as you can toward your target's general direction. If you can sneak up on your target, hold shift to hide your gamer-tag and walk without sound. Then the best strategy is using a sword, for maximum damage.
Defending:
If you want to attack with a sword, always press both left and right click. this means that your attacks will do full damage and your target's attacks will do half damage. If an arrow or fire charge (or another projectile) is coming towards you, attack it with a bow or sword directly to deflect it. Always wear armor, as if you die, you have to travel back to them and by then they will have healed, so get them in one strike.
Protecting your base:
try to build your base deep into a natural structure. This will make it hard to penetrate, with thick walls you don't even have to build! Hide then entrances and exits so that it isn't suspicions even if they see someone go inside. Always have multiple entrances and exits, this will be very helpful if you are attacked and cannot defend it.

Tip: Hot-keying is useful, but it is illegal on some servers, so be careful!

You got the hit-block combo down, but some more important aspects:
-Supprise
-Strafing (or hit-back up combo)
-(only true for some servers) Hotkeying, or souping
