most know it, and run it as well but what exactly strip mines?, how it works, and it is efficient? all I'll show you a few drawings in this tutorial that should help you. let's continue to talk without much since a short tutorial is better than just tell and describe
1)the first thing you should do it's best in the middle of nowhere to dig a staircase. as deep as you want, important uses stone inventory, you have got not much to lose, for there are enough saplings and stones
