I suggest combining different shading templates to get the look you want. There are many on PMC if you search the skins.

Hey Kefka, this is an awesome tutorial, and I got it to work, but I have one problem: How do I upload the skin I just made using Photoshop to Minecraft and set it as a player skin? I might sound like a n00b, but I need help. Or is it possible at all? Thanks!

save the file as a .png
then you can upload it to PMC or change your skin here http://minecraft.net/

I did that. When I clicked "Upload File" on the Minecraft.net page, it said "Invalid file" or somthing.

Never mind. I got it. I had to shade it myself, apparently, because my computer crashed and Photoshop deleted my skin. D: But anyway, I custom-skinned it using McSkin3D and I got this result: http://www.planetminecraft.com/skin/ice-golem-contest/

this is SO stupid this ruins shading now you do it in a step! now you don't need talent to make skin now you can just make it. if you like this and use it you are SO LAZY L-A-Z-Y!

sorry but this is how i feel you are one of the best skinners out there but if this is how you shade then forget it it mean you have no real talent!

If you look at any of Kefka's skins you can tell that he doesn't use this method. When using this, the shading comes out very square-like and boxy, which doesn't resemble any of his skins. Also, this method does not shade any portions of the hat on a skin, so Kefka couldn't have used this on his skins.

I do not shade with this method and you will never be able to create a great skin this way. This method was meant for only beginners that want to add a little bit of shading to their unshaded skins.

(Posted earlier on the actual skin, I was told to repost here) If you want to shade your skins using this and gimp, open your skin up, then click File>Open as layers, and open the template/grey shade skin. Then, in the layers box above Opacity, click the arrow next to Mode and change it to Grain Merge. File>Export, DONE! Enjoy ;3

what i did was open gimp and open my skin to gimp, then go to open as layers under file and open the template. After that i went to winders on the top right and went to dockable diolags and clicked on the layers tab. When the layers thing is up the mode is at normal and you can change it to whatever looks best. You can alos change the opacity. Im stilling having trouble getting it to work as my own skin.

I use skullduggerycains way, but you have to go on gimp, go to the top right hand corner and find a section called "windows", click on that, go on dockable dialouges, another section will pop up on the side, click on layers on that section, and you can change the opacity on both layers of the skins. Hope this helped :D

No, I have not tried shading like this. My template is more for refference. I focus on my colors the most in my skins, and this way would not allow as much control for me :p

it will cover the entire skin, when you add the "grain merge" to the template layer it will then blend.

No, I found 'color to alpha' but it makes the colors a lot darker. I recommend putting the template into skincraft, then making your skin, then merging the two skins together. It has MUCH better results.
