First of all, please forgive me if I repeat any words, have incorrect grammar or if I generally fail on my English. I am from England so I will spell things the way I was taught, such as "Colour, Favourite, Neighbour" etc...

The enlarged pictures links just seem to not work at all... sorry about that.

Introduction

So you want to make pretty patterns? I'm here to give you a guide on how to create unique patterns that look like Bob Ross sprinkled a little bit of his magic on your creation.

Currently I have no patterns to show and I will be going through this with you so you know what to do.

I should point out that if you want to create a detailed pattern that will wow anyone that lays their eyes on it, it will take time. I intend to take a few days to write this tutorial as they are both time consuming. I also have college so that will slow things down a fair bit. I started at 4am on the 25th of November 2015. Let's see how long it'll take.

I'll try my best to make this blog look pretty as I don't have much experience with PMC.

I will enclose everything in spoilers because I don't think anyone would appreciate it if I spam the page from the beginning.

The Different Types of Patterns
Okay, so there's different types of patterns. The main pattern I'm going to show you is a colourful pattern on the floor, which i'm just going to call it the "Colourful Floor Pattern" I'm not very good at making any other pattern. You can either make a pattern with small shapes to make it look compact or a pattern with big shapes to make it look open and you can use more colour.

Okay, let's actually start making the pretty patterns!

Colourful Floor Pattern
So here we'll start to make the pattern. I make mine look sorta mosaic. It's worth to note that you should make the pattern symmetrical, you don't want it to look like a jumble of blocks which is why we make it the way it is.

First of all, we need a starting point, whether it's on a singleplayer world or on a plot on a creative server. I usually make it in the middle of whatever i'm trying to fill. As for me, I'm on my own server on a flat map just to make it easier to demonstrate.

Outline
My starting point is just a simple stone block to mark that it's the middle of the pattern.
Like so.

That may be hard to see, but it's just 1 simple stone block. That is where I will start.

Next is just my preference but this is what the middle of the pattern will look like. You can do whatever you like with the outline, just as long as it's symmetrical. I'm going to make a small circle.

I do this by simply placing 4 blocks (the amount depends on how big you want the circle) in each direction and then going from there. If you don't know how to make a circle in Minecraft, then I can recommend some sort of pixel circle generator.  I make my own circles which may look different to yours but that's okay.

Then with this you can make different and unique shapes and possibly connect them. You have to make sure they're symmetrical or it may look like you threw a bunch of blocks on the floor and called it a pattern.

All I did here was add a simple shape to all 4 sides of the pattern and changed the material from stone to dark oak wooden planks. If you would like, you can start to add colour into these open spaces; i'm going to wait until I'm finished with the outline so I can get a good idea of what colours would look nice.

Here I only added a few blocks that gradually meet and it's starting to look like something that could have potential. I'm already getting ideas for what colours to use. I don't think it is needed to add these little explanations anymore as you probably get the point of what i'm doing. Add shapes to make a bigger shape and make sure it's symmetrical. This is one of the simpler ways and in my opinion the better looking option. From this point on I'm only going to add screenshots instead of a small explanation. Here goes...

Alright, I believe that's enough outlining for now. If you'd like to do a bigger pattern for maybe a spawn, you can keep going and raise some parts like the smaller circle inside. You can make it look a lot better but for the sake of the tutorial, I'm going to leave it at this. Next will be colouring it.

Colouring

This is pretty obvious but I have filled in the small circle with yellow stained clay.

I had this colour in mind earlier on when I was building the outline, and I think the finished product will look somewhat decent.

I struggled with deciding on which colour to use. Lime stained clay or green stained clay. Lime looked too dull so I went for the green.

This is an example of what doesn't work for the pattern. This colour will change as it looks pretty bad as it is now. I'll finish the colouring before I change it though.

I filled in the little corner things with orange and the outer nipple things with lime stained clay. The colouring is finished but I still need to change that thing in the middle.....

I have changed the colour to a light blue and I have also added a black outline around the edge to make it pop a little more. You can do this for all of the wooden planks but if it's a small pattern like this then I don't recommend it because it could cut off too much space.
The Finished Product

An example of a different approach
I'm going to do another pattern which is similar to the old one but will be slightly different.

I have already created the pattern and I made the shapes a lot smaller and more compact to give it a unique look. This could be a good floor pattern for a spawn of a server. I'm not very good at building so I'll try my best to make it look half decent.

I have made the floor a layer of glowstone and instead of using stained clay, I'm using stained glass. It may not look good from this screenshot but that's because you can see each and every block of glowstone because it's taken from above.

I attempted to add a little roofy thing. Failed. Completely. But it's just an example so it's fine.
Perhaps we can slap a bit of shaders on there to make it look better.

Well it doesn't look completely terrible. Maybe it would look better if I lowered the glowstone by 1 block.

Shaderpack is RRe36's Shaders V7 Extreme

You should get the idea. You basically start from the middle, then it's trial and error to get the right shapes that you want. If you have a pattern in mind, go for it! See if you can make it. They're really fun to make and it could make something a lot prettier for example if you are building something like a hotel, which has a lobby then you could have a pattern on the floor stone bricks and stone slabs. You don't have to use colour to make it look good. I like colourful patterns because it's a preference.

If you look at my example of  a different pattern, you will see I used stained glass. You could substitute that for stone slabs (double slabs) to make it look different but still visually appealing.

End

Once I get the time, I will attempt to show other patterns by updating the blog. I would do them now but they're so time consuming and I just really don't have that time right now.

I aplogise if this was difficult to understand. I'm not very good at explaining things so if you have any questions, don't hesistate to comment or message me. I'll try my best to respond as quickly as possible.

Thanks!
Thank you to everyone who has read this.  If there was anything you didn't like about this blog, please tell me as I would like to improve. No hate, just constructive criticism. This took me a while to do because I also had college and other not so fun stuff. So thank you for taking the time to read this.
