First of all some texture packs can upgrade the look of your Modern creation so that may be something to look into

Front entrance: the main entrance does not always have to be where the door is, this consists of big windows and balcony's (most modern houses have two stories) mainly you should look at putting in an s bend to make the two levels as shown here. you will also have to put in windows .

building the base of your house can be annoying but you just have to stick to the rules: do not build diagonally( keep it SQUARE), all sides should have windows(don't make windows large and boring and don't repeat the same window over and over) also you may want to put a rectangle over your window, this consists of grey wool in a rectangle covering a window(it can be horizontal or vertical) this should stick out from the building.
