when i got board i spawned alod of zombies and started killing when i finished a zombie droped a iron ingot of the floor and i know it wasent a mod becuse i only had 1 mod instaled the toomanyitems mod. if someone knows if notch has told us about this can u send me a link plz.

Here is the Minecraft change log from Minecraft Wiki. There you can read down all the changes which were made with every update. Make sure to check it out every time when Minecraft updates.

PS: yes this "secret" update has been stated in the change log as well

Zombies now have a rare chance of dropping iron stuff. Skeletons drop bows.(Sometimes enchanted) And pigmen drop golden swords, helmets and ignots. Its a part of the 1.2 update.

Two things:
1)Not notch: Jeb_. Notch is not the lead for Minecraft anymore, so it would have been something Jeb_ more then likely added.
2)Although I can;t find the actually post from Mohjang or Jeb_that states this zombie drop, the Minecraft Wiki does show they do drop iron ingots or iron helmets.

i have 1.2.3 and i don't get rare mob drops and iv'e destoyed 30 zombies in my machine
