Introduction:

Have you ever typed in p-l-a-n-e-t-m-i-n-e-c-r-a-f-t-.-c-o-m and saw that it was down? Of course you have, I am here today to explain to you why this happens.

Why it is “Down”:

The theories that come to mind, when I see that the website is down are; there are too many people on the website at once, but when it is down for an extended period of time that theory is out of the book. Now I think that they are updating PMC, but after I get on I realise that there is nothing new that I can physically see. After that every time I see that PMC is down, I feel that it just goes down.

In actuality it is not down, to explain this, Paril is here to tell you...

“They aren't down, they are just running some services that eat up connections. The services are made for smaller sites, and our site is the biggest on our hosts' network. It seems that the services don't work very well for us as we have a lot of files & a huge database for it to crawl through, but the services are global across the whole network and can't be disabled entirely for an individual user (+ it would be dangerous for us to disable those services as they are a huge part of keeping the site alive).” -Paril

For example if you are not very hungry, you only eat a little. If you are not very hungry and someone gives you a lot of food, and you can’t waste it, you eat it very slowly. Just like this the services take some time because they have a lot of files to go through because, they are not made for sites with this many files, just like how a small appetite is not made to eat a whole Thanksgiving Meal.

What They Are Doing To Stop The Problem:

Paril gave me very limited information on this topic, but all he disclosed to me was that…

“Yes, we are actively working to solve the problem. It has been in the works for many months.”

I asked for further information, but I got no response. So it was my job to figure this piece of the puzzle. My theory is that they are trying to help the host which they use, but the host is not responding. For example the host is not wanting to create a new service just for Planetminecraft, because as Paril said “our site is the biggest on our hosts' network.” and they feel that creating a new service is unnecessary because...

“if it ain’t broke, why fix it?” - T. Bert

But I want to know the truth, I can write pages and pages on what I believe, but not what the truth is. I finally got a response from Paril and he said that...

“It's a long process and a bit difficult to explain, nor do I know if I'm allowed to disclose any internal information, but I can at least tell you that the second step of fixing the problem is what we're doing right now: moving any static data off-server. All files, images, etc are being moved to a static Amazon server and will be synced there instead, that way our origin server (ie, the place that hosts this site) will only have the site code and nothing more. This will reduce the amount of files needed to scan from 800+ GB to only maybe 20 MB.

There's a lot more to do after that, of course, but this is one step in a long process to getting the site a bit more stable.” -Paril

To recap what Paril said, they are going to make it easier for the host’s services so it doesn't need to go through so many files.

Conclusion:

This is good and bad news for us, the good news is Cyprezz, Paril, etc. are working on the problem, but the bad news is, according to Paril this is a very long process so it will still take some time until we have any results. Hopefully this isnt as long as we all think it will be and it will end quickly.

Thank you, it took almost a week to "perfect" this blog, but it seems that hard work is not very popular on planetminecraft, but a few like us care.

Its not that simple, because I feel that they have a deal with their current host.
