In the next few weeks I will be returning to the "traditional" blogging type, while still trying to make my blogs stand out. I will still be doing stories, just less frequently or only for contests. Here is part one of my "Back to Basics" journey:

Some of you have noticed, some of you have not, it really depends on the time you've been here (or perhaps your observational skills, either way) that well, sections of this site evolve, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. For those who have not noticed this, don’t worry, I’m here to explain. For those of you who have, you are free to debate with me on this in the comments of this post.

Building

I admit that I have not been here long enough to be able to compare 2010 to now, but I can say for sure that the Projects section, compared to 2012 is very different now.

It’s obvious that the whole of Minecraft building started as just making a shelter for surviving the night or perhaps a farm for food. Over time, Minecraft building has become an art of it’s own. I know people on this site who build for hours, days or even months just to make something perfect.

Another thing we can look at is building groups. We can safely assume that these started out as just a couple of friends building together for fun, right? Today, there are entire groups usually called “build teams” that either spend hours building for fun, or spend hours building for profit. Some of these groups become true elites in what they do and they’re generally the ones who ace all contests here on PMC.

Of course, this doesn’t mean traditional survival and for-fun building is gone, a lot of that can still be seen everywhere. It can even be said that some of the current greatest builders do what they do for fun, and consider the benefits as just that, benefits.

Skinning

There have obviously been a lot of changes in techniques over the years. Shading is different, members love to experiment with new techniques and there are entirely new ways to skin than there were before. It can be argued that skinning is a form of art, and, like all art it has its changes over time.

Something I would call a major update in the skinning world is hat layers and the Alex model. With the introduction of 1.8 layers and Alex, an opportunity for new skins was also born. The new model is interesting to use, because unlike the old one it calls for better use of space within the hands. There is nothing much to say about the hat layers, they’re wonderful things and probably one of the best things that have happened to skins. Start observing the world of skinning friends, it’s a wonderful one.

One thing that I hope for, but don’t believe will happen soon is higher resolution skins. At this point of the blog I’d like to thank the lovely chat people who explained to me what essentially a high-res skin would be.

Blogging:

Have you seen any changes in the blogging section? No? That’s probably because they’re some of the hardest to spot.

I don’t remember much about the blogs in 2012, except the ones that I made. I think it’s safe to say that in the blogging section every type of blog has evolved at least a little. Here are two example evolutions:
  1. Stories. What started out as a bunch of Herobrine tales and just general mob-related content is now something that we have even in official contests. Neat, right?
  2. Tutorials. I believe these started out as just introductions to updates, or tutorials on how to use specific parts of the game. Right now, I see they’ve grown into tutorials on how to create entire contraptions, guides on skinning, etc.

There are periods of spam, such as the constant FNAF theories, the illuminati things and even the teen skin rants, but the important thing is that blogging goes past them and continues to evolve.

At the end of this all, there is not much of a conclusion I can give you. Perhaps I am just over-analyzing things on this small site that I’ve spent so much time on. Though, it is nice to notice small things like this. They are of no relevance, but why does that matter?

I consider the main change how mainstream some skins are. So many FnaF and teenage skins...

Consider it like pop music, there is ultra mainstream crap and there are ballads that we usually don't notice.

You sir, are one of a few with good taste. And, I was looking through skins, and there were very few gems. The only skins that are good are by professionals who have been here for a while. (Minus a group of friends of mine, who are extremely skilled)

like I said mate, just like pop music.
The important part, the part which should be our goal is to keep the gems that we speak of coming and not to let them fade away.

If you were here before 2012, then you would have seen some of the best advancements in PMC. When chat was buzzing with usually more than a hundred people on everyday and buildings had to have been extremely unique to make the pop reel. Not to say buildings today are bad. A lot of them are really good, but once in a while, I see one that I, personally, don't think should be on the pop reel.

aye. Don't remember much of 2012 either though, it mostly consisted of posting dirt houses and bedrock boxes and getting angry when people wouldn't tell me they're amazing, haha.
