The Process of Starting a Mini-Game Server

Minigame servers, the core of networks. One of the biggest risks you can take when making your server. Either your mini-game will be good or bad, this depends on many steps you take. I am not a java coder so I do not know much about coding, but my friend who codes many bukkit plugins does and showed me process of it all so I have a small idea about that. I have spent a few years playing Mini-Game servers from the rise of spleef to the success of survival games, may it be classic Minecraft or full-version, I have been playing mini-games. I know a thing or two about mini-games, not finished though. So this is what I think in general games a good mini-game server.

A Game Plan

Sometimes I lie in bed, thinking about cool ideas for mini-games. I need to think of something, not too complex, but not too basic. I have talked to people about mini-game ideas, most of the time people over-think there idea and it becomes an inpossible burden that they can not finish. So the first thing you need to do is decide if it is going to be a small 2 minute mini-game or a 15-30 minute long mini-game. This should help decide you plans for the server later on. So I am going to make up a small mini-game idea. Lets call it Landlubber
, I actually designed a similar mini-game before. Now we need to get into MSPaint and draw up an example of the game.

Okay, we go that done. So my idea is two teams, one called Landlubbers and one called Pirates. The Landlubbers have an area to move about and bows, the goal is to shoot the pirates and kill them, the pirates have to survive. I'd say a 3-5 minute game. The orange means the Pirates spawn and Brown means Landlubbers spawn.

Host

Now, you need a server to host your idea. You could hire a coder first, but lets just get a plan. You are going to need a host, I would start off with just one server with 15-20 slots. For a small mini-game servers. 15-30 minute games you may want about 20-35 slots. You will need some decent ram since you are running a mini-game server. Not sure about complete numbers, about ram numbers and cost. You want a trust worthy host you should go to this site for reviews. http://www.bestminecrafthosts.com/category/approved/
Pick and host and do a little research. Once you have chosen a host, before purchasing the server, time to get the plugin made.

Coders

You have got a lot of stuff organized. Now you are going to need a coder
. First thing I would do is if you have a friend who can java code bukkit plugins, ask them about the project. It will most likely not be free, but you would get someone trustworthy to do it. If you do not have any java coding friends or your friend can not do the project. Off to bukkit.org. I have not dealt with people on bukkit before since my friend can code java. But you may want to look for a trustworthy coder and ask him about a price for him to code the plugin. Remember choose trustworthy over cheap. Someone could scam you out of money or upload your plugin after it is done to bukkit. Remember to be detailed about your plugin, including stuff like spectating, lobbies and most important donation perks. You could also self-code if you can code bukkit plugins.

Setting up

You are going to want to set up your server now, you will be using Bukkit I guess, you will want to either get DonationCraft which you get from setting your site up with enjin which gives you the rank in-game and on the forums or BuyCraft. I am not a BuyCraft expert, so look up a tutorial on youtube or if you use DonationCraft, it will come with a tutorial. If you do not really want to design your own website, go with enjin since you get a great donation plugin FOR FREE also a server website which you can get the free version or monthly paid versions. Essentials is also a handy plugin to have and world edit and voxel is great for making maps. You are going to want to make maps, hopefully your plugin includes map voting.

Advertising

Advertising is really important, so you best do it right or your server is going to sink into the ground. Make sure you put up your server on voting sites, because you are a mini-game server, you have a high chance of players staying on the server and coming back if they like the mini-game, something that survival and creative servers don't have. If you get deprerate then get advertising on some of the voting sights. After you get a bit of players, you may want to look into getting smaller youtubers to play it, it will not be free though you can get some players from it. Like I said, if people like the mini-game they will keep playing it.

Thank you.

This is a semi-article semi-tutorial and I hope you liked it. I could have gone into more depth, but I did not.
