I woke to the sound of waves ebbing and crashing against the bow, the rotting wood squealing with pain as it faced yet another day against the wrath of the sea. I could not lie on the splintered deck any longer, not like the rest of the crew. I would not make their mistake. I could not break and collapse into defeat, for just like them, I would surely die. I grabbed the spyglass that rolled towards me, keeping a firm grasp on it as if it were the key to paradise. At the time, it seemed like a mere wish, a dream that I would be unable to make a reality. But as I held the glass to my eye, I soon found that my wishes were not in vain, and my paradise awaited my arrival.

I felt a smile spread across my face, soon spreading into a gleeful grin across my haggard features. My voice erupted into laughter, my joy coming out in uncontrollable howls of merriment. I felt like shouting to the heavens, praising them for blessing me with the gift of land.

"Tierra!" I roared, "Tierra! Tierra!" My tired lungs ached with each bellowing cry I uttered, but the pain went unknown to me. I had found the land my captain had promised, the land that the crew had risked their lives for! I quickly scampered over to the mast, tearing at the sail ties as if they were trying to restrain me from my discovery. As each piece of wind-battered fabric fell into place, I quickly tied them, not allowing the sails to escape from the path I had planned. Finally, I rushed over to the wheel, preparing to steer the boat towards my paradise.

As the waters became shallow, I prepared to drop the ship's anchor and equip my raft for my journey to the land. Alas, it was hard to focus as my destination became crystal clear. I could see beaches with sand like sugar, the cerulean tides gently lapping against it so as to consume the sweet substance. I could see lush tropics, with trees of all shades of green dotted with what looked like flowers in all colors. I am shocked I was able to tear myself away, but I must have realized that I would never enter paradise if I just stared at it. The anchor plunged into the sea of jewels in a glorious swan dive, bringing the boat to a slow halt. I climbed into the raft and fumbled with the pulleys until they lowered me into waves. Without hesitation, I released the raft from the pulleys and took up my oar with great speed. I dug into the ocean, paddling with all my might in order to reach the alluring shores.

Finally, the hull of my raft embedded itself into soft sand, allowing me to take my first steps into this new world. Retrieving my sword and pack from the boat, I surveyed my surroundings, looking for a clue as to what my first act would be. I soon heard a low growl, my stomach aching from intense starvation. It was clear that I needed to find myself a meal before any exploration could be done. I drew my sword from its scabbard, making my way into the dense jungle on a hunt for food. Little did I know, that I would find much more than some sweet fruit and rodents.

I had heard something scuttling across the jungle floor, the steps sounding much heavier. My captain had spoken of a deer-like animal with grace beyond belief. However, I was only concerned in the meal it would provide. I treaded lightly, adjusting my grip to prepare for a killing blow. It was closer now, just about in striking range. I lunged out,but my blade did not dig into hide, but rather air. But before I could swivel around for another strike, something pounded down on my back, pinning me to the ground. Even when I tried to stand, something held me down, keeping my face in the dirt.

"Who are you?" a voice spat, teeming with confusion. I tried to respond, but the soil filled my mouth faster than I could speak. I heard a laugh, and something pricking at my neck. The stranger mused, "An explorer, eh? You've probably got something valuable on you." I soon realized what my attacker was doing, quickly wrestling my head free to speak.

"Please," I begged, "Don't touch the locket. Take anything else but that." But it was too late. The thief had already released the fastener, the gold chain slipping away from my neck and into their hands.

"Oh, what beautiful craftsmanship. You were a fool to wear something as precious as this in such a dangerous land." The bandit was getting cocky now, loosening their hold on my body. I took this chance to find my sword. It couldn't be too far from me, and if I could get a grasp on it, I could make this petty thief pay. I scrambled around, finally falling upon the hilt of my sword.

"I'll give you one last chance to hand the locket over," I threatened, "or I'll take it back myself."

"What makes this locket so important to you? Let's find out, shall we?"

"Don't you dare!" As the thief was distracted, I firmly gripped my sword and jumped away from the bandit. I turned back to face my opponent, my blade steady and ready to strike at the heart of this wretched crook. I waited for an attack, but not even a punch flew. Looking past my sword, I saw the figure of a woman, staring at the open locket with a shocked expression.

Finally, she murmured, "How do you have this?"

"What do you mean? It was given to me by my father, Captain Roldàn Alba."

"Tell me," she said, "Why did he give you this locket?"

"When our ship came into contact with some wandering pirates, the captain suffered a fatal gunshot wound. But before death could take him, he called for me. With his last dying breaths, he handed me the locket and asked me to find the woman inside it. That woman was my mother, Evita."

The woman gasped, "Oh, mi amor... He really was coming for me."

"Pardon?"

"Celino, hijo, how you have grown..." She stepped forward, coming out from the shade of the trees. Her features became clear in the golden light, making her look as she were his guardian angel, coming from heaven to protect her precious son. It was unmistakable. Evita was alive, and my father's efforts were no longer in vain.

"You were so young when Rufino captured me," my mother lamented, "I have missed so much of your life, and you have lost your father because of me. Even when the natives of this land freed me from my prison, I still did not come home to you."

"Do not weep over me, madre. I have found you, just as he would have wanted."

"How can I accept the love of my son when I barely know him? It would have been better if you had forgotten me."

"I came to this land seeking a fresh start. I wish to make a home here and acquaint myself with the native peoples. However, it is also a fresh start for you, a chance to rebuild what you have lost. This land is a paradise, and in paradise, one can heal even the deepest of wounds."

Ye; but compared to . . . 'the parakeet land' , anything's really good.
But on its own, it is pretty good; not perfect because nothing is, but it is decent.
