This should be fine for your needs, OP. You can throw Linux on there if you wish, or fork over another $90 or so to get Windows 8.1.

My PC specs of the PC I have built myself are the following:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kGtnCJ
My PC specs have changed a little since then with me upgrading it.
I now run Windows 10 Tech Preview, use a Gigabyte M6900 mouse, Turtle Beach X12 Headset, Logitech 1080p Webcam, Bamboo Graphics Tablet, 250gb SATA internal drive, and a 970 GTX by GeForce. So with that said, I hope you aren't referring to me as a console peasant, although I do enjoy the many consoles I do own. (I don't own the PS4 or Xbone though.)
Well, those aren't very good specs for the price you paid for them..
There isn't any RAM in the build...
And those monitors must hurt your eyes...
And you have a 750w power supply without even a discrete GPU, but I see now you finally got a 970. Shame, with the R9 3xx series GPUs just around the corner.
Well, I can tell you this build would be a better use of your money.

FurryRaverAl CatSplatFurryRaverIf you want something cheap that can play Minecraft I recommend an Xbox360 or Playstation 3. Gaming PCs have yet to drop into the $500 and below price range from what I have seen.
However, if you are looking for a PC that can get max on minecraft with anti-a off, low chunk distance and minimal particles/fast settings, you could probably scrape by with a $400 PC, such as a Lenovo H415 and achieve the 40 to 60 FPS area.
Obvious console peasent that knows nothing about PCs.^^^^^^^

This should run Minecraft at 60+ FPS easily, paired with your 8GB of RAM.

Do you live near a Micro Center? And do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget?
Also, this is DDR3 desktop RAM you have, right? Just want to be sure.

Perfect. That lets you grab a G3258 instead of a G3220 (they're the same price, but the G3258 is only that price at Micro Center).
