the tutorial said

to allocate more RAM, launch the game, and press the "Edit Profile" button at the bottom left. There should be a check box called "JVM arguments", check that and input: -Xmx2G to give 2GB to the game, or -Xmx2G to give 2GB of memory. Once you have checked and inputted the data, hit "Save Profile".

i did this and my computer said

Error: Could not Create Java Virtual Machine
Error: a fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit

my computer has 4GB ram
its a 32bit OS

Its more of you need a 64-bit OS, CPU. If your CPU is a 32-bit bases CPU then yes you will need to get a 32-bit OS. But these days i don't see to many 32-bit bases CPUs. For me iv been having this problem where i have a AMD A10 5800k (64-bit CPU) and windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. But for some reason when i go to install things like java and other software, it installs the 32-bit version. Because im getting this same problem but i have a 64-bit CPU and OS. Iv uninstalled and installed java more than enough times but im still getting the same error message.

GUYS, listen up, he has a 32bit operating system, so he CAN'T allocate more RAM to his mc, nor can he buy more ram, unless he gets a 64 bit operating system.

I think you may have to make 2gb into megabytes. So do this -Xms 2048 or -Xms2048

You can't put more ram in a 32 bit operating system, get a 64 bit system or stop trying.

32- Bit systems can run up to 2GB of RAM on Allocation - if you have 3GB of RAM (or more) go ahead and use : "-Xmx2048m -Xms1024m" in the JVM Arguments on the 1.6 new laucher.
64- bit Systems can run up to 8GB of RAM on Allocation, Use:
3GB Allocation: "-Xmx3072m -Xms1536m"
4GB Allocation: "-Xmx4096m -Xms2048m"
5GB Allocation: "-Xmx5120m -Xms2560m"
6GB Allocation: "-Xmx6144m -Xms3072m"
7GB Allocation: "-Xmx7168m -Xms3584m"
8GB Allocation: "-Xmx8192m -Xms4096m"

That is all I know, there you go.

If it doesnt work, not my problem.

I'd advise using 2048mb or something of that sort because Minecraft (and most other games) don't say "using 1GB of memory". Most game platforms and/or formal programs use megabytes as it gives you the exact amount

Most people think 1000 megabytes = 1 gigabyte (GB), well, it's actually 1024MB = 1GB

2048MB = 2GB

Or, if what you said:
karrthus1
and i have a graphics card sitting beside me...i just need to install it

is even true, you could just do that, and not have to worry about allocating more ram.

I would say you should get a better processor. From personal experience, RAM doesn't have that much to do with it. Do you know what your processor is and what it's speed is? If not, I can help you find that out.

Since you are running a 32-bit OS, the max memory able to run on the system is 3.5 GB. You may put as much as you want but it will still just run with 3.5. The windows and stuff usually takes around 1-2 GB so I would just recommend leaving it as is since you can't really do anything.

It means that you do not have that amount of memory, for example if you have 5 amounts of memory your computer uses 4 GB and u have 1 GB to spare and if u have like 16 GB it uses 8 GB and u have 8 GB's to spare

You could have an Intel 12-Core Xeon processor, a 6GB EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan Black Edition, 128GB of RAM and 6TB of SSD, but with a 32-bit OS, you'd still only be able to allocate 1-1.5GB of RAM to Minecraft. Buy the 64-bit version of your OS instead of a new processor, as the processor has nothing to do with it.

You can only allocate ~1.5GB of RAM before Java will error itself. This is due to 32-bit systems' processing limitations.

For performance, RAM has really nothing to do with it, save for stability. What will improve your performance is getting a more capable graphics card.

If you want Minecraft to go faster, I don't think RAM has much to do with speed. (Of course, if the amount of RAM you have is very low, then maybe...)

When i install shaders and leave 1GB of RAM, it lags, when I allocate 4GB RAM it doesn't lag. So performance is improved. i am having the java error too, and i just had my PC fixed and I have 8GB RAM...

Maybe it can only allocate 1GB or under?
I get this too.

It is -Xmx, because -Xmx1G is the default.
