Introduction
Hello everyone! I am very happy to announce my first building series: Bern!
I've always loved the architecture of Bern's old city. And since I've bought Minecraft (in December 2011), I have always wanted to re-create the city of Bern with all its beautiful cathedrals, churches, palaces, towers, houses, bridges etc. But as you may know, re-building a whole town is extremely difficult; It needs a lot of patience, time, skill and a rather big team with experienced builders. Well, as I am lacking a build team, and after a long time of studying the city on Google Earth, I reduced my intention to single buildings. Famous, beaufiul, important and architecturally pleasing constructions of Bern.
And well, here we go now! :D
About
In this series, I am re-building some of the great and famous buildings of Bern's old city. There will be churches, cathedrals, palaces, monuments etc. Every project gets posted as a single one, there isn't simply one post which I always update after adding a new build.
I can neither say how many buildings there will be, nor how long it takes to create one. It might be difficult, because I really want to make them as realistic and accurate as possible.
Buildings
As I've already said several times before: I want to build the big, beautiful and famous ones, not just normal houses. Maybe there's going to be a "normal" house though, typical for the old city of Bern, we'll see. :)
You can find the list of these buildings below. I'll always update this list when I've finished a new build. The buildings which are written down here are the ones I'll definitely build. If I decide to make another one, or one more, it will be changed or added here, on this post. So this list is always up to date.
When I have done a building, I'll mark it with something like [DONE] and the link to the post.
Well, here we go:
Bern Minster - DONE - http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/bern-building-series-1---bern-minster/
Pictures:
The Bern Minster is a Swiss Reformed cathedral in the old city of Bern. Built in the Gothic style, its construction started in 1421. Its tower, with a height of 100.6m (330ft), was only completed in 1893, about 450 years later! It is the tallest and most important cathedral in Switzerland. In my opinion, also the most beautiful ;)
The Federal Palace - DONE - http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/bern-building-series-2---the-federal-palace/
Pictures:
The Federal Palace is a symmetrical building with a length of about 300m (948ft). It's one of the most significant constructions of the country, and also the place where the Swiss parliament meets for its sessions. The oldest parts of the building are from 1852, it was finished in the year 1902.
Also a really beautiful building, I think. Not easy to build, especially the interior because I have no idea what it looks like inside...
The Casino - DONE - http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/bern-building-series-3---the-casino/
Pictures:
Not that much to say about this one. It's a very nice construction built from 1906 - 1908, in a late baroque-classicism style. The use of this building has changed over time; nowadays the big hall inside is used for concerts, and the other pieces are part of a restaurant.
St. Peter and Paul Church
Pictures:
The "St. Peter and Paul" is a Catholic Church build. It was finished in 1864 - built just next to the city hall of Bern. The architecture of the church is the result of an international contest with a lot of participants. Its style is a mixture of Romanic and Gothic.
This was the list of the buildings which I'm definitely going to build. Now I have some more ideas, but I'm not sure whether the following builds will go well with the general idea of the series and I'll firstly have to check if it is even possible to build them due to some considerably difficult features.
So here's the list of the builds that - eventually - will be part of the series as well:
The "Zytglogge" Clocktower
Picture:
The "Zytglogge" (I know it looks weird in English :P) is one of the most famous showplaces in Bern. It's a tower with an extremelte detailed, marvellous clock. Always when I pass this place, there are tons of Japanese and Chinese photographing and marvelling at the tower. ;)
The City Hall
Picture:
The city hall of Bern is the place where Bern's parliament meets for its sessions. This happens fife times a year. The picture shows the building in the year 1890, in its old design. It was rebuilt later - due to this rebuild, it lost a lot of gothic details and pattern. Therefore I'm going to build it in its old design, which is much more beautiful.
A Fountain
Picture:
There are a lot of spectacular fountains in Bern's old city, built in the 16th century. Most of them have a historical background. Some of them are really impressive - that's why I think it would be cool if I made one. Of course Minecraft doesn't give us the possibility to build that amount of detail within such little space. So obviously, I'll have to do it about 10:1. This'd actually look even better, I'd say. ^-^
Closing Words
Thank you everyone for reading! I'm sure while you read this blog, you noticed some mistakes (typing errors, grammatical mistakes, orthography, tenses etc...). So I'd be grateful if you could write a comment, tell me where the mistake is and how to fix it. Thanks. :)
Apart from that, feedback as well as suggestions are much appreciated.

I've been very busy with school and that stuff lately (and will be for two more weeks...), so I haven't had much time for MC
As soon as I can finally get back to it, I'll focus on the casino! It'll look great - here is a under-construction picture if you're interested
