PC Build Help
So, Im getting super fast internet soon and I decided to get a whole new setup. Ive never built my own PC before, so I thought someone might could do a PCPartPicker list for me.
What is this computer going to be used for?
Gaming (Garry's Mod, modded Minecraft, Team Fortress 2, etc.
What is your budget?
1300 US Dollars.
Where do you live? If in the US, do you have a nearby Microcenter?
US, no microcenter..
What is included in the budget?
Full tower (all the parts, including OS), desk, chair, and moniter..
Will you be overclocking?
I don't really know what this is to be honest..
Will you be reusing any parts?
No.
What OS do you want?
Windows 7.
Any specific case preferences?
Anything that isnt ugly or bland.
Any other special features that you want in the build?
No, ill probs use a wifi adaptor for wifi. (Ive heard they're faster, idk though. Could you clear this up for me?
Thanks guys.

It'll run Titanfall fine. And it probably can't run Crysis 3, maybe it can on low.... Low fps in metro....Thats about all I can think of.
1
Well, I'm going to get off and watch some TV before bed. I'll check on this post tomorrow.
1
Also, will this laptop be able to run Titanfall? Are there any games it won't be able to run?
1
Nononono the 15.6 does have a numberpad. Thats why im getting 17.3. Im afraid that the 15.6 keys will be to small since it'sonly 15 inch with a full sized keyboard and number pad.
1
I think I'm going to go with the 17 inch version on the laptop. It has a keypad on it, and Im afraid that, with a 15 inch laptop, the keys will be way too small with a full sized keyboard + numberpad. btw thanks for the link.
1
I did not know that the 15.6" model didn't have a number pad. I hate keyboards without number pads.
And no problem.

Link please?

This is very similar to the one we have, but I think it's a newer model.
Oh, and it has USB for network-attached storage. Not sure if that is anything special, but it's there.

I also need someone to pick out a router for me.
1
I have a Belkin dual-band router. It was like $60 or $70 and up until about a week ago, had about 7 or 8 separate computers (plus a rack server) running on it. Now, the rack server is hooked directly to our modem (which is also another router :S). We've been using it for years and it has yet to fail or even stumble. The range is good, too.
1
BUT ANYWAYS back on topic. Can you list some games that I won't be able to play at reasonable settings/reasonable fps (if there are any)
1
My options: Dial-up, Satellite internet (reasonable price/speed but low data limit), and Verizon wifi that is, for some reason, slower than dial-up here, or broadband from the tower than is currently being built) My neighbor has the satellite so I use her internet a lot. PS I'm the only person who uses a computer anyways, so that's not an issue.
1
7 Mbps will work for a small family home, but don't expect everyone to be using the internet at once and not have some issues.

1
The only other option is dial-up. So, 70 for 7mbps is pretty good where I live. What I hate is, if I lived about 4 or 5 miles from where I do now, I could get 1 gbps internet. Plus a city 2 hours away (Nashville) is getting Google fibre optic next year.
1
Are you planning to pay $70 a month for 7 Mbps? Ouch. We pay $60 for 30 Mbps internet (about 6 Mbps up) plus TV, and I think that's a rip off.
You may want to look at other ISPs if you can.

1
They're building a broadband tower less than a mile from my house. They've been working on it for a little over a month or so. It's being built by a local company called JTM Broadband.
1
ATM im using dial-up (It's litterally the ONLY type of internet we can get out here that doesn't have an extremely low data limit)
1
Internet speed comes from your ISP not from a router. And a tower? What kind of internet are you using? Lol
1
Can you list some games (if there are any) that I wont be able to play at reasonable settings?
1
Also, since the tower is being built less than a mile from my house, are you sure it won't be 7mbps?
1
Hm. My friend (who is really smart with computers and a trustworthy person) has the same internet, same package, etc, and he said with a 'Netgear N700 router' his wifi was boosted up to 40-130 mbps.
1
So, im guessing it will also be able to run heavily modded Minecraft (CrazyCraft modpack/tekkit modpack for example) at max settings?
1
If im getting a 7 mbps internet package, can you find the best router for me? Is there any router that will boost the speed?
1
no, you'll never get over 7 mbps. You'll probably never get to 7 mbps. Maybe 4.5-5 mbps.
1
About the screen size, idk. I'll only be moving it around my house.. but idk. Ive always used 15.6 inch laptops, and I'm afraid i wont get used to 17 inch because it will be to big. On the other hand, the bigger the screen, the better (gaming wise)
1
So, the 17 and 15 inch are no different, and they will both run Watch Dogs better than PS3?

PS3 specs:
This laptop's specs:
Yes, it will run Watch Dogs better than a PS3.
This laptop running vanilla Minecraft (recommended settings):
- 256 MB system RAM
- 256 MB GDDR3 GPU memory
- 3.2 GHz CPU
- 550 MHz GPU clock
This laptop's specs:
- 12 GB system RAM
- 2 GB GDDR5 GPU memory
- 2.4 - 3.4 GHz CPU (clocked at 3.2 GHz) with 4 cores and 8 threads
- 1.02 GHz GPU clock

Oh yeah, by a long shot. PS3 and 360 hardware are ages behind modern PC hardware. If you drop that laptop down to 720p, and turn it up to high/ultra, you'll get about 45ish FPS, which is faster than a ps4/xbone. (They both with run it at about those settings.)
1
Alright, so im guessing http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GE70-Apache-P ... ing+laptop will outdo the alienware. Should I get the 17.3 inch version or the 15.6 inch version? Is there any difference performance wise?
1
Watch Dogs on reasonable settings:
For its recommended settings:
^ It wasn't until I saw this that I realized how underpowered laptops really are compared to desktops.
Keep in mind that this is the strongest of the three laptops you found earlier.
For screen size, take your pick. 15.6" should be large enough. Past that portability becomes a slight issue.

Idk. If anyone can find me a laptop that will run intensive games like watch dogs etc that is $1300 or less, then I will consider it.
1
That MSI laptop you found earlier is your best bet.
1
That's one of the best GPUs you can buy in laptops. It'll run any game, maybe not exactly on ultra, but it'll run em.
1
Dont get the alienware laptop. You can build a pc with the same specs for have the price. I would get a desktop, especially if you already have a laptop you can use. If you have to get a laptop either one of the other two would way outperform the alienware one.
1
Alright, will do.

Thanks SO much guys. You've all been a huge help, I'm subscribing to you all.

Well, I actually need the extra cash lol. I mean, the internet im planning on getting is 200 dollar instalation fee, 70$ a month, plus im planning on getting a $170 dollar gaming router. So, I think I've made up my mind and my final decision is the Alienware 14 gaming laptop.
1
Nooooooo, don't buy a "gaming router" those have "overpriced" written all over them. You don't need a super fast one, those routers support up to like, 500+ mb/s download, but if your internet only supports 10 mb/s, then you're wasting money for an extra 490 mb/s speed that you can't use. Just buy a linksys/netgear/etc router, ~15 at like walmart or something.
Don't buy a laptop, desktops will run a lot faster.
(P.S. Watchdogs plays at 30 fps, at like the lowest resolution possible, with no water in the game, on ps3. It will look like crap, but your desktop will run it on ultra, at like 60+ fps.)
And don't buy an alienware, go with an MSI gaming laptop, if you have too, because of the better price.

TheShadBusher, would the alienware laptop still be enough for the above-mentioned games? As i still have a PS3 for more intestive games like Skyrim, Watch Dogs, GTA, etc.
1
I read reviews on the alienware laptop. People have said that they have played portal, assassins creed, skyrim, world of warcraft, etc on max settings with no lag. Im pretty sure it would meet my budget and my needs, considering im only getting a gaming PC for games that arent on PS3 (Minecraft, TF2, Hawken, Garry's Mod)
1
Yes, but for about $200 more, you'll be getting a computer that will last a lot longer. The Alienware has less storage space, less RAM, a less powerful CPU, and a comparatively awful GPU.
1
The first one of those laptops is by far the best in terms of specifications. An i7, 12 GB of RAM, and a GTX 860M. The other two laptops have a GT 750M and a GT 755M respectively.

If I decide to get a laptop (which will eliminate the prices of the desk, chair, and moniter), which of these will perform the best:

2. http://www.amazon.com/Alienware-ALW14-1 ... ing+laptop

Ok. Sooo. My budget is 1300. Found a chair for 60, desk for 100. This is a moniter I like: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-23-6-Inch ... ch+monitor Will it perform well? If so, that leaves 840 for a tower. Can you try and get me a build for that price?
1
Yes indeed it is cheaper, but it also has worse specs.
1
The x51 wont perform nearly as well. You say it's cheaper but a custom built for that price will also be much better.
1
That should run games well
