How can I change the type of player my server draws in? It is a hardcore faction server and the majority of the players are all backstabbers and people who think everyone is their enemy. I would be fine about everyone going crazy if the new players got a chance to live. Maybe if I could get a more PvP players and less wild griefers they might actually turn away from turning the new players wooden house into a crater.

Why don't you give a relatively safe place to warp to for new players before they decide to stay on the server and brave the hecticness of the wilderness. Then they can be promoted via a sign and warped into the rest of the world

Here's a plan.

Install multiverse and multiverse portals.

At spawn, give a selection of portals to start from. Each portal leads to a different spawn point. Then at those points, you can setup no pvp regions.
