Does Yoshi have a Shell or a Saddle on his back
Okay, so, I've been online for a few hours and I was thinking of Mario out of nowhere, then I went to thinking of Yoshi, and my sister said that Yoshi was a Dinosaur and it isnt a shell. We had about 10-20 minute argument about it and never got to an agreement so I wanna see what you guys have to say.
I'm providing pictures so I can prove a point on what I think.
1. Image 1 is a random picture I found from a dude. You can clearly see that he has a Shell, but i'm still not sure.
2. Image 2 is a Comparison of Nintendo's game and art, vs. the Cartoon.
This is a confusing one so..
3. Image 3 I've heard a LOAD of people say that it was a Cushioned Pillow type of Saddle thing. Then explain this, Mario is not squishing it at all. Otherwise, it'd be flat.
4. Image 4 People also said that the shell has no Detail, like a Koopa shell or such.
That just proves this pictures point, this is a picture of a Parabeetle.
Does Yoshi have a Parabeetle shell?
5. Image 5, this is the last picture.
This picture is Blue Yoshi, with wings. FROM the shell. Does that make him a Parabeetle??
I would like to hear your opinion on this. I took a lot of time setting up this whole thing so I would love feedback of any sort. Thank you.

It's a pretty interesting question as all fully grown yoshis have one of these mysterious red, round objects on their back and well if it's a saddle you would have ask why all yoshis even in when they are on their own (Like in Yoshi's story) wear them, if it is the shell however you would have to ask why a they do not have the shell on their back when they are an infant (all shelled creatures have at least a small shell as a baby).
Unless it's some kind of clothing they wear that just naturally works as a saddle just like how they naturally wear boots.
Wait a minute they are born with their boots on. Biology in the mario world is weird as all heck

This is fun to watch..But as I was saying - Baby Yoshi dosn't have a "shell" - It must be a saddle..And it was most likely put on later on in time.

This is weird. My mind must be going fast because I remember in Super Mario World for the SNES, if you adjusted the blocky CRT TV's right you can see Mario's feet in stirrups (the orange part). You can also see his hands holding something (reigns I'm guessing) which he uses to open Yoshi's mouth.
Nintendo can't just suddenly change the rules like that. Back in those days you couldn't really go just by the cover. They probably make it look 3D later on and gave it a backstory. Even in the 90s Nintendo made some mistakes regardless of the golden seal.
Edit: The orange I'm referring to is actually Yoshi's hands in the SNES version, the only time they ever were. I don't know anymore.

trust me, nintendo confirmed it was a saddle

I like the idea of a sheddle!
1
why not be a sheddle? so basicly its a shell he has but since theres no other use he (or she but my mind is remembering this general yoshi as male but sunshine also shows that a yoshis color doesnt tell you its gender) lets mario and others use it as a saddle and maybe cause it wouldnt be comfy for him?
either way theres no clear answer without theorizing
EDIT: nope apperently someone else came up with close to sheddle though imo sheddle keeps the words while shadle would be missing a d but either way maybe coming up for good names for mixing shell and saddle?

This thread makes me question my childhood.

This is quite an interesting post..! I do believe it's MAINLY a shell, But also counts and is used as a saddle..And for all you folks saying that it dosn't look like a saddle, This is a fictional world after all. I have seen Yoshi's shell be used kinda like a Koopa's.
I have also seen photos of the "saddle" having a shell texture..
Also. Baby Yoshi's don't have a shell. So perhaps it's not even a shell, It's a saddle?

Shell.
... Shell?
Hmm... Not sure anymore.
Let's just say that it's a helmet that fell off his head, because it's hard enough for Mario to sit on it without it bending/breaking, but it still doesn't look like a shell.
Wait, maybe that's why Yoshi gets scared so easily when he gets hit? He doesn't feel confident without his helmet... What if he doesn't know that the helmet is on his back? Maybe he's been searching for it for months, years, terrified that he'll never see it again...
Okay that was slightly silly but

Threads like this are always so entertaining.

1
Of course everyone knows that Yoshi has a saddle

I think it's a shell
Look at what a saddle looks like
They are meant for comfort, and are made of comfortable-ish material. I don't know about you, but a round, hard shell just doesn't make a good saddle.

Well, depends on the design of the saddle. The English saddle is more lightweight and used for better control over the horse. The Western saddle is made to be more comfortable for the person and the horse. But since that fact wasn't even relevant, I'm going to say that it is a shell, however, I can only imagine the horrible experience of riding it. It must be twenty times worse then that feeling after an hourlong horse ride.

I like this...

Anything is a saddle if youre brave enough
1
TRUE, TRUE, my friend. Nice thinking. Though when I googled it all that came up was vague articles about yoshi and forums on other sites debating the topic.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yeah, it's totally a shell!
1
there is no need to theorize about this
"Yoshi was originally supposed to be a type of Koopa. That saddle you see on his back was actually his shell." —Super Mario World Director Takashi Tezuka, Super Mario History
edit:
edit 2:
that means it is a saddle
That saddle you see on his back WAS actually his shell. meaning that it WAS supposed so be a shell, but it isn't. thus it is a saddle.

Hmmm... This is an interesting theory you have here. I'm rather unsure, as I would like to do more research on it before making a decision - but thank you for creating this, as it's very interesting.
