I do not believe that Essentials has been updated to 1.8 yet. At least not officially which means if you do have one that is for "1.8" it is probably an Alpha build it could also be a little unstable if it is an alpha build. If you are running the newest spigot I believe that would be your problem. I wouldn't quote me on that though.
