Other than the CPU cooler (which is good, but not great for an enthusiast build), that's a pretty great build. The only gripe I have about it is the slight CPU-GPU imbalance that limits future upgrade options. With the other two builds posted, OP could just throw in a second GPU later on if he needed it. With yours, he could go triple SLI, but he would need to upgrade his PSU and the CPU may become somewhat of a bottleneck further down the road.

CaptainMuricaI like BananaInCharge's build, but this will deliver better performance (and possibly better performance per dollar seeing as how I was able to swap from a pair of 390X's to a pair of 980 Ti's for only a $400 price increase)

On your friend's current computer issues, it sounds like the hard drive is dying. Swap it out for a new one or consider getting an SSD instead and see if game performance improves.

Why on Earth did he buy two dual GPU cards????

No one person has a need for 4 Titans in their gaming system.

How did he even... why did he.. WHY

They're triple slot cards as well, how did he fit them in the Aurora case?

EDIT: Just Googled the case and I'm 99% sure you cannot fit two triple slot graphics cards in it, two dual slot cards has enough difficulty

Well 20 minutes is pretty unacceptable for a computer as expensive as his.

I'd wait a bit for someone else from the PC building squad to post a build and take the best from both builds (mine and theirs) as there will be things I've overlooked here and could be done better.

he has a dual monitor setup, that might help with issues.. it also takes 20 minutes to boot, timed.. and confirmed

one monitor is 1280x1024 and the other one is 1080p

EDIT: i also just remembered that he got Two GTX Titan Z's.. i think it was that one that was new last year, just before the 9xx series came out, and three of his cards fried... the two titans and a 770

Dual 770s shouldn't be causing any frame rate issues unless he is playing at 4k or 4k downsampled with DSR

What are the specs of his Aurora because it can't be a 3820K if it is taking that long to open Chrome. The game performance is understandable because I believe they came with Crossfire HD 6870 which is pretty pathetic in 2015 for high settings AAA gaming

yeah.. he does actually need a new pc quicker than 2016... because hes struggling at running gta 5, or witcher 3 at 60fps 1080p for some reason... and i think hes set to med settings, not sure but starbound can pull off max 25fps while i can pull off 60...

but i sent him the list and he can figure out if he wants to go with that or if he wants something different

... also he timed how long chrome took to open.. chrome takes almost 2 minutes and firefox takes about a minute. he also has two 2.5tb drives that used to ve in raid but it was causing issues, so he had to disable the raid

Okay, first off I would recommend waiting if he can because Broadwell-E is supposed to be released in Q1 of 2016 and since he already has the Aurora, which I believe uses the SandyBridge-E 3820K CPU although I'm not 100% sure on that one, he doesn't really desperately need an upgrade right now.

Having said that, it doesn't seem like Broadwell-E is going to really bring about ground-breaking changes to the CPU world so if he wants to upgrade he could, after all there is no such thing as future proofing anyway.

I went for the 5820K on the MSI X99A SLI motherboard. The 5820K because the only real difference between that and the much more expensive 5930K is that the 5930K has 40 PCI-Express lanes whereas the 5820K *only* has 28 lanes, making 4 way SLI impossible but 4 way Crossfire still possible. Not that anybody in their right mind should be Crossfiring 4 390x GPUs for intent to game.

He can't actually use his old RAM because it is DDR3 so I've chosen 32GB low profile DDR4.

I didn't know what size HDD he has already but I chose a 3TB WD Black drive because you can never have enough storage and Black drives are designed for gamers in mind. In addition to the HDD, I chose a 250GB SSD. I was originally going to go with an M.2 SSD which would be blindingly fast in desktop applications and would boot up the PC faster than you could sit down. But I felt that probably wasn't needed and it was much more expensive, the option is there if he wants to use it in the future though.

I was going to choose 2 980 Ti graphics cards but then I decided against it because 2 390x cards will perform completely fine, even at 4k, for even the most demanding games and there is no particular reason to spend a load on 2 980 Ti cards when you can get the same performance from Team Red. Plus on the 390x there is 8GB of VRAM so there's a slight advantage there but I'm struggling to think of something the 980 Ti would not be able to run just because it has 2GB less VRAM than the 390x

I went with a 1200W PSU because if you're overclocking you need headroom and 1200W should provide this nicely. 1000W would be cutting it a bit too close and could cause instability in some cases, so I'd go with the 1200W.

The monitor is pretty huge at 27" but it is 4k so anything smaller begins to make text in games quite difficult to read. Ignore the Xperia Z5 Premium with its stupid over 800PPI Pixel density, 4k screens should really be at least 25" and even then I consider that to be better for 1440p and 23" to be the highest for 1080p. Others may disagree but that is my opinion.

The CPU cooler is really good but if he wanted to go for a full loop then I'm not much help here. A full loop liquid cooling system is easily doable in a 3 grand budget but it would mean sacrificing elsewhere probably if he wanted quality liquid cooling equipment.
