Group Manager or Pex?
Hey guys I've been changing a lot from GroupManager to Pex and Pex to GroupManager. And I can't figure out which one is better. So I need your help. If you were to chose 1 of those 2 which would you choose and why? Your opinion would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
EDIT: Does Pex supports Sub Groups? e.g. [A] coolmaximus1 [God]

I personally have managed a lot of servers in the past and still manage several servers, all of them use different permission plugins, some use pex while others use group manager. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
PermissionsEx
Pros: regex permission nodes, multi-world support, single file.
Cons: can be buggy at times when using dev builds, when user join they sometimes don't have permissions generally after ban (believe it is fixed now though).
Group Manager
Pros: Very good multi-world support, capable of mirroring permissions across multiple worlds (in the config)
Cons: Multiple files and can be a pain when you need to add a permission to every group in every world
Its really a personal choice, when I have to setup a server I prefer PermissionsEx, but that is just me. It really depends on what you need.

I've used both and still do on a regular basis, and Pex is much more customisable and easy to use. Those who say it's hard or not user-friendly are just too lazy to figure out how to use it properly.GirithiumI would definitely recommend PEX and here's why:
- - From my experience, some plugins usually are built to be compatible with PEX
- - It's VERY easy to configure, so it shouldn't be too hard to learn
- - There are a lot more features to be used with it
Thank you both for getting a bit of my hope back.
Also, to the people that are saying PEX doesn't support subgroups obviously hasn't even tried to configure them, and yes, they do exist.
It's called inheritance. Small explanation for you:
2 Groups:
1. "VIP" has the permission plugin.vip
2. "VIP+" has the permission plugin.morevip
Setting the "VIP+" group to have inheritance over the "VIP" group would cause the "VIP+" group to have the permissions associated with it as well as the permission from "VIP" because it inherits the permissions from it. In the end, "VIP+" would have the permissions "plugin.vip" and "plugin.morevip"
One can give inheritance to a group in Group Manager as easily, if not easier, than one could in PEX.
The point of the post is for the people that practically have nothing against PEX except for the fact it "doesn't support sub groups" and apparently isn't stable. It honestly shouldn't matter which plugin allows you to configure it anyway (It's only a slight couple of seconds) because, in my opinion at least, the less amount of time you do something, like making a configuration file, the more likely it will fail at doing everything you want on the first try. The point was suppose to for the most part explain to people that you can indeed have subgroups on PEX as well.

You should look at YAPP. I use it for my server and it runs very well

There are somethings that Pex doesn't support, like Sub Groups. Although it is a bit difficult with all these ''ddv'' things at the end of the command in GroupManager. Some plugins DO NOT accept pex, and even they write a comment saying that the plugin might not work perfectly with Pex installed. I used pex for my prison server before and when players /rankup it wouldn't change their prefixes. So I got a custom Permissions plugin.
Anyway, thanks guys for your opinions! But I'm still looking for more opinions!

I would love to know what horribly coded plugins will not accept one of the two mainstream permission plugins.
1
its all based on opinion but i prefer GroupManager over PermissionsEx anyday
1
I hate PEX, Groupmanager forever!
1
Used gm once. Never again after finding out about pex.

I would have to go with PEX on this one. I would recommend GM for the noob 15 year old server owners though, because it comes with pre made groups (I think, when I got my first server and had GM it did lulz) Anyways, with PEX for me it works globally, so if you have like 20 worlds on your server (Don't lie I know you have more than just 1 main world xD) then with GM you need to create groups for each world, but with PEX its global And you can get nifty plugins like VaultRank so you can just do /rank (player) (group) which is ez for your Moderators to rank players from Player - Player+ or some insignificant rank such as that. If you read all this heres a cookie just for you
1
Ok. You realize that I use PEX and I'm 14. I don't think it's fair to call 15 year old server owners 'noobs'. I have hosted mine for about 1 1/2 years with a bit of success. May you should get on mine and some other 15 year's servers before you activate the noob alarm. 11 year old server owners are usually noobs though.

Group manager all the way! Sooooo easy

PEX. Do not listen to the people who say "PEX is unstable;" it is more than customizable as well as completely stable. I've used PEX on the past 3 server networks I have run, each time it has performed phenomenal.
1
I never used Group Manager. I use PermissionsEX and it works perfectly how I want it.
Try both and see which is easier for you and what suits your needs.

Groupmanager is way more user-friendly... I don't recommend PEX.
1
PEX, because you can customize it better and there is more support
1
I would use PEX. More customizable.

I see that many stated saying GM. Although I still can't understand how to use this ''per world'' when I want the ranks to be in ALL worlds. e.g. PlotWorld.
And again, thanks guys for helping me out to choose the ideal permissions plugin <3

If you're using Essentials, I'd recommend GroupManger. FYI. Its not abandoned, the Essentials Team took it over
If you're gonna use GroupManager tho, there's a tip:
"FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST! DON'T PUT PERMISSION NODES IN YOUR GLOBAL.YML"
Trust me, just use the per world group.yml

Thanks for your opinions! As well, isn't GroupManager abandoned?

No? If it is, someone else will pick it up.

I've worked a LOT with GroupManager, so that's the one I tend to use. It's pretty straight forward, and goes with the essentials pack. So the configs are similar when it comes to permissions (There are a lot of essentials permission nodes). If I were you, I'd start using GM and just stay with it. The more you use it, the better and faster you'll get at configuring it. I would recommend setting up your permissions in baby steps. Do some work, then test it out.
Whenever you test out your GM permissions, always restart your server. DO NOT ./reload. It pisses GM off sometimes. Also, when you restart, watch the console very closely for when GroupManager loads. If you get a ton of lines with a bunch of gibberish, that means you messed something up.
Google is your friend for both Pex and GM. There are a ton of Youtube tutorials as well. Good luck!

Group Manager is way better than PEX, PEX is really buggy and unstable... And no, PEX does not support sub-groups.
1
PEX PEX PEX. It's config is way simpler.
