Chunky is easy to use and can, with very little time of getting used to it, give you decent results! Blender is also great, but might take a bit more time.
Personally, I use chunky. Not only because it is free, but also because it can render everything I want right away within less than 10 minutes (that already includes photoshop editing)

Cinema 4D and Blender are probably the most time consuming to set up but render quicker, and Chunky needs a good CPU and time to render something so there's a win-lose situation with each. I personally use Chunky but I've been using it for a good while now so I've figured out different tricks with it. For a first time render, I'd suggest Blender or Cinema 4D. I've seen others use something called Maya.

I'd actually say you should use chunky as first time render (wether you mean a preview render or if you're not good at rendering) because you can just load the world and hit render to get an overview.

3d modelling programs don't always render quicker but you can use many more effects
you need more ram for less blocks tho. if you want to render just terrain or a very huge project (example: valhalla by thatoldkid) i always recommend chunky. but if you want smaller fancy renders use c4d, maya or 3dsmax (blender is pretty hard for beginners, c4d the easiest)

and of course progressive rendering (the way chunky renders, but c4d and others have that option too) is always slower.

i think a big part of renders is the post processing.
but i always use more post processing for chunky renders: http://i.imgur.com/LbY97ky.png strong colour correction, strongly increased contrast)
than for renders i make with c4d: http://i.imgur.com/bDZJQd0.png (slightly increased contrast, some very light cross processing)

chunky is a minecraft photo rendering thing. it creates pictures like shaders only if your computer can't handle it.

Nah, he is best sticking with Chunky, which can do massive maps. If he tried to do something that big with Blender (assuming he does not have some massive computer) it can get kinda laggy. Blender can't go wrong

I personally don't have a great laptop so when I use blender it takes a while. Don't worry too much about that though if you are the same, it's worth it.

You want to turn an image into a schematic?
Something like this?
http://www.diamondpants.com/spritecraft/

I'd suggest for HD you broke it down into more manageable pieces.
You could then either use World Edit to load them in game or MC Edit would probably more useful due to the size.
