Yeah its the new 1.3 update that added many new things to the game, like Jungle temples with new redstone items called ''Tripwires''
Also the TNT you heard was new Derest Pyramid, it has a pressure plate below the pyramid, and TNT below the pressure plate, so when you walk on it, it blows up. And it was probably a creeper who triggered it.
