How do I make it so 1.7 users can connect my 1.8 server?

So I have a 1.8 server but some of my friends still use 1.7, I've seen a few servers that allow both versions to join the same server, if anyone could help me with that that would be great.

There is a way to get 1.7 and 1.8 on the same server but you won't be able to use any 1.8 features as well as it has many bugs that will make gameplay difficult. And it's not worth sacrificing everyone else's experience because a few people are lazy or use too many mods and won't update.
So, tell your friends that they have to update to 1.8 (it's been out for a while, they should have updated already) or they can't play. Simple as that.

I didn't know this was actually possible. If so, I too would like to know more about it.
