I've improved a little, when I started in Alpha v1.1_2.01 up until Beta I built everything in cobblestone, post-Beta I started using log trims on interior walls trying different materials like sand and snow blocks, I don't go over-board with detail I think unless it's a massive build too much can look cluttered,
From my main world (2010 - present):
Alpha front entrance:
Beta:
2012:
2013 (October):
2014 (October):
2015 this summer:
That wooden hut by the birch tree dead center has been reverted back to nature, the church was re-built from scratch this year, the old cobble bridge knocked down finally and replaced as was an old wooden platform onto the sea, now a water gazebo and the wheat farm is now circular.
I used to build everything rectangular to start with, these days I'm circle obsessed and I love to use dyed hardened clay. The bedroom in this world and it's outside brick walls (Shown in last picture) will be getting a make-over. In the center of the picture the nether brick roofs have gone in favor of stone-brick, no vines and the brick in the bay window has gone too.
This is but one world however. I try and make use of upside down stairs, detail where possible, my old cobble fort in this world - called Mount DOOOooom is getting a makeover mixing materials to break u the cobble. (Started in beta),
I certainly like to make use of new materials whether it be modern wood, clay, new stone types, hardened clay and I refer stained glass over regular. I'm always striving to try and "Do better".

I haven't improved too much, but I went from this
to this
(Yes I know the sails are flat, I'd fix it if I still had the map)

Well, the first thing I built in MineCraft was a house about 3 blocks wide, and now I'm actually building stuff like this: http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/emerald-town/
(Some of the pictures are outdated)
Awesome builds!

I would say a lot since I started building and a lot less while I'm at it because I couldn't build a house in MC when I first started but I was great at Terraforming the environment around me but now its the other way around

A build I started work on in 2012:
http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/nether-brick-factory/
aand my current best completed build, in terms of detailing skill. The render isn't as good, but more will be coming.
