wait a minute.... i saw someone making a forum post about stranded a long time ago....
1
was it by this guy?
if so, then that is me. I had to make a new account because I deleted the email that the old account was bound to. I did have a previous post of Stranded. it led to a forum I had with my brother. It was a batch game however. Batch is simpler than Python though.

Ha ha! No, not even close! This is a glorified text-based adventure. Good luck trying to get anyone interested.
What's with the rudeness? "Resemble" can mean anything from a tremendously minor scale to a hugely similar level. In this case, the game does indeed have many terms we are comfortable hearing as related to Minecraft, such as pickaxes, swords, and logs.
Also, OP, I kinda see why you prefer JOptionPanes at the moment. I just did a successful experiment and improved Tamago Ichi's window system a bit, and I also messed a tiny bit with OptionPanes in the meanwhile. They are most certainly useful, but the extra effort making a JFrame is very worth it in the end, imo. Especially considering your window doesn't reload everytime you do something.
*EDIT* As the such, get the update out first, OP. Prepare to move to a whole new world in the next update you're coding.

Thank you for the feedback on my game, your opinion will be cherished and remembered.

I looked at your game and tried to make a frame, but it is FAR more complicated than JOptionPane. I am not ready for that stuff. I just want to get this update out.
1
Maybe it's because of the way I did it. If you stripped out the rest of the game, the actual game window code is very minimal. Did you find it complex because you have to add specific parts into each window (e.g. the text box, input field, etc.) individually?
As I put in the note, all you have to do is create a JFrame object, and done, you have a window. You can do stuff like .setSize(X,Y) and .setVisible(true).

your link isnt working, but I will give you my email so you wont have to worry about anyone else getting your code: danielbradley1998@gmail.com

Fair enough. It still works for me, though. Also, look at the Edit I made.

You just have to learn JFrame, which is actually far simpler than JOptionPanel...I don't know why you went with dialog boxes first..

Here's the code for Tamago Ichi so far. Remember that it's not complete (at least, I haven't implemented the leveling system, but the game itself already works just fine, at least for the main parts of getting the score and leveling up; you just don't get class upgrades).
I'd license it or something (I'm particularly scared of people plagiarizing my code), but I don't care, as long as you read the code as learning material which you then use your knowledge to make your own code, or if you source me if you copy directly. But code of this kind of scale is kinda useless to try to protect. It's too small to worry about. For anybody else, feel free to grab it.
Also, it's two files in a "tamagoichi" package. Preferably, leave the .java files in that specific folder. The test.java is simply a quick lookup on how many eggs a specific level would cook per turn, and the values that led to it. The program itself is in Primaire.java. They're uncompiled too; I hope you have a JDK lying around, if you somehow don't have one.
And one final note; the game currently uses a one-line textbox as output. I could use a text field that is multi-line and far easier to work with (and even shows you what was printed before), but I didn't like the look of it in my window, so I went the hard way.
*EDIT* Decided to play the game before I sleep. Ahp, look at what I did. Highest record in history. I dare you to beat me >:D

Well, since I know at least one person cares, I will give out some good news.
1.) I am working on an update that will have saves! Stranded 2.2 is coming soon!
2.) Because you can now save your game, I have some new ideas:
- Tons more resources, crafts and biomes. (once I think of them )
- Combat (With mobs and stuff)
- Having one window instead of 500,000,000! (learning to make a single window . is harder for me than you would think!)
- Graphics and GUI (Far Future :/ )
- Please give me more cool ideas!

o.o, savegames.
Are you really modeling this game after Minecraft, or are you creating a nice survival game with a variety of themed environments? If you're making custom environments, maybe create your own take on things and have a biome modeled after your hometown or home country.
Having one window isn't that hard once you got the hang of it, lol. I can give you a bit of source code if you want, that uses one window with input and output together.

Yea that would help. I already have a question posted on Stack Overflow about making a simple window, but I am so tired of JOptionPane!!
1
lol, we still care about this game. If you want it to survive, try making banners and the such to put in your SIG or something. I can do a simple one that reflects the game, if you want. I haven't worked on Tamago I in a LONG time, but it's mostly complete. I still have to finish the level system, that's all. Keep going, OP.

I am terrible at drawing and anything to do with art, but I will try to see what I can do, thanks.
1
okay, I removed the link because I thought no one cared about this game anymore
feel free to get mad at me while I put it back up.
..............there, done.

Can't open it, says java exception occurred.

*Just posting this reply to make sure I can find this thread tomorrow. Seems interesting, and I plan on downloading it myself, but I can't right now.

By the way, guys, I started coding on a game similar to this one (well, the game concept is nowhere similar but the input and output system are). Instead of dialog boxes, I actually made one window with input and output at the same time, and it looks awesome. I'll update you guys when I get "Tamago" out.
And of course, to OP, if you would like the source code for technology research, I can post it, if you would like a single-window system instead of dialog boxes all the time.

Yea...I am pretty new to Java still. I have only been coding it for like a month. Having 1 window would be pretty good though.
1
This is extremely good progress on your part for 1 month. Sure, I am not punctual and consistent in learning even though I learn fast, but I currently have like over a year of experience (actual coding and reading done? Maybe about 2 or 3 months worth), and you're not too far off from me.
1
I made another small release before I will release Stranded 2.0. Click the link on the first post to take a look. I think the commands should be easier to use now. Instead of typing in "collect /?", you can simply type "collect" to get the commands now. I hope this makes it a little easier to play. Don't worry, I am almost done with Stranded 2.0! If you didn't do so already, check out the updates.txt file on the link to see what I am going to add on this awesome update.

Sorry for not asking permission, OP, but it's gonna take some time. I'll take these down later if you wish. Here's some screenshots of the game, guise.
The almighty input window of the game, where you will be spending most of your time on.
Help is provided for every command.
The game features a basic hunger and energy system, and sleeping recovers your energy for the next day. There's a basic crafting system available, including for a pickaxe which you will need to collect stone.
*EDIT* Found my savefile for The Firelit Room, a popular online game.
This game is considerably similar in concept; a text-based game where you start from scratch in nowhere, collecting and creating things as you advance in the game.
The title does not (at least, as far as I have played) point to some form of horror; it instead refers to the concept of the game where you are alone and surviving with nature.]
*EDIT 2* Damn it, while typing this post, Java closed the game. A fair warning to you guys; Java has a habit of randomly closing programs if you go AFK from them for quite a while.
*EDIT 3* Ah, it didn't close the game. It's just that the game has no program icon for Windows 8, so I have to ALT-Tab to it. But just so you know, guys, the game has no save system as of yet.

(3) If I were OP, I definitely won't PM you even though I needed your help. A bit rude man. Come on.
Can someone tell me what people mean when they say OP

jjcyalaterWell...
I decompiled your code (I don't care if you like me doing this or not) and have started to work on some major improvements for this game such as different scenarios and such, pm me if interested in collaboration or something.
Come on, dude.
(1) That's a bit rude. Not asking for permission. If you really wanted it, you could just rewrite the game from scratch. Not that hard.
(2) "major improvements"? For me, that's a matter of opinion. I find that quite an insult to OP, stating that his program needs major improvements and that you will be the one working on them.
(3) If I were OP, I definitely won't PM you even though I needed your help. A bit rude man. Come on.
To the rest of you guys, if I come back from school tomorrow and settle down and still don't see any screenshots, I can post some. I'll avoid spoilers though.

Dat ram allocation doe :O
1
Impressive. Very impressive. Even my iBook G3 can run it in that case (it has 64MB of RAM, this program along with the JVM will fit in like a cat in a sock).
*EDIT* Open taskmgr and see how much RAM it actually uses? Java likes to overshoot the limits.

13MB for the entire JVM and the game. If this game advances further, it'll definitely prove to be a very enjoyable game for low-spec computers.
1
I can only imagine people playing this for a few minutes, Lol.
1
Not if...ACHIEVEMENTS.
No, but seriously. I like this game. Kinda a bit inspired. Kinda want to make my own game now, and I'd put long-term goals in them. The game would be designed to be heavily replayable.
Imagine if this game had another crafting recipe; "village", and it'd be made out of 6 houses. That would be a better "endgame" kind of thing. But let's wait for OP and see what they plan to do.

WOW, GUYS!
Explore the game! I was confused on why commands were hard to use, but I eventually explored a bit and started to use them well and understand things. I managed to collect 2 wood, made a fire, cooked my food in them and slept for the night, finishing my first cycle.
It's really neat, OP. I really want to see this go further. Good job so far, and the default Swing UI works well. The game definitely doesn't seem scary, but the simplicity of the interface very well pairs in with the simplicity of the game.
Would you like suggestions?
*EDIT* No, not annoying suggestions that ask you to ditch everything you have done. I mean, simple things that are easy for you to implement and are unlikely to violate anything your program or style was made for.

Pictures would be appreciated, I won't download game I don't know about. You haven't give us any kind of information to make us interested.
1
It would be pretty nice if you could actually do something except writing "help"
1
I should do some more explaining about how the commands work.
Typing in (for example) "collect" alone will not work. You need to specify the resource you want to collect or type "collect /?" to get a list of the resources, this goes with all the other commands. ("view /?" "use /?" "create /?") I am agreeing with everyone here though, the command console is really freaking annoying! I am working really hard on an update that will not only get rid of these commands, but also add a time system, biomes and way more resources and thing to craft.

I can't launch it and even tried running it. Could you tell me how to?

1.) Make sure you have JAVA.
2.) Try taking JAR file out of the zip file
3.) If all else fails, see if anyone else who posted could run it. If they couldn't run it, I really need to see how to properly make a jar file, if they can run it...you're on your own...I am still learning Java so I don't know how else I can help you.

Care to show some screenshots or more info on the game? This seems really sketchy at the moment so I'm not going to download it.
1
I looked over the source. It seems fine. OP, you should probably add an api of some sort.
1
hey man, so i downloaded it and ran it from cmd prompt. I get a little box where i'm supposed to type a command, a little more details on how it works would be nice =p props for even getting it to display a box xD i'm practicing java also, its understandable but takes practice.
1
I will agree with everyone here: Typing in commands is very annoying. I will soon start working on version 2.0 where I will get rid of the nasty commands and make this game a little more enjoyable... I will add some random generation to the game by adding terrains, in these terrains I will have unique resources that you can use to make even more things.
1
Okai so im pretty Nooby when it comes to downloading MC things other than MODS or Resource Packs, and I downloaded this but I dunno where to put it in my .minecraft folder. Once I do, what do I do next?
