Knockback: The Enchantment for any Occasion?

The first time I faced someone with a knockback sword, I was astounded with the results. The fellow with the sword sat in our base, on top of a house. He was positioned just right, so that arrows couldn't hit him. For a good 15 minutes, 5 of us tried and tried again to climb up and remove him. Each time though, he would send us flying, painfully, to the ground. Thus began my fascination with this enchantment.
Fast forward to several months later, where I'm playing on a server that emphasizes arena combat. I'm fighting with my sharpness 4, fire aspect 2, and knockback 2 sword. This and a combination of potions and good armor means that I can win most of my combats.
But lo, I find that I am vexed!
Before I can strike the final blow, my opponents continuously turn and run! No matter how hard I pursue, every time I catch up and hit them, they go flying forward, escaping me. Suddenly I realize that perhaps knockback isn't so great.

My experience is that knockback is only good if you are not confident of victory. A good hit from a knockback sword can send an enemy flying off a building, or a parting hit can keep the enemy away from you for a few seconds more. To this day, I still have not found a satisfactory way of offensively fighting with a knockback sword, at least not in a way that stops opponents from running away easily.

Can anyone shed light on some method(s) that I am missing? I would like to use knockback, since it can really help in tough fights, but I want to be sure I can use it for any situation.
Thanks,
GrauPanzer

My tactic is to make use of the knockback only when i have my opponent cornered, as the knockback sends them flying into the wall, only a mere foot/meter away.
