Since you are a new minecrafter, I agree with madison_madison to start out small. But always strive for detail. When in doubt, add depth to your creations, like fences, half slabs and stairs. And finally, becoming a master builder doesn't happen over night. Just keep practicing and building. Note, a little redstoning might be useful if you want a flickering light.

Yes, Starting off as a new minecrafter, You should start off with the basic combination of blocks.
Here what I think looks good with each other:
- Logs and Oak Plank (Combination Varies Due To The New Wood Blocks Added)
- Logs and Cobblestone
- Quartz and Leaves
- Quartz and Glowstone
- Stonebrick and Netherbrick
- Oak Log and Bricks
What I believe you should not use for building.
1) Any type of Ore Blocks (Coal, Iron, Redstone, Etc)
2) Sponges
3) Sand
4) Gravel
5) Dirt (Unless for farming or essential for the house)
6) TNT
7) Pumpkins, and much much more.
Hope this helps, sorry if this is too long. Good luck as a new minecrafter though!
