(obviously there's going to be some, but...)
I've noticed lately that on essentially many people's threads, the ratio of number of replies and number of views are usually 1:10 or over. If a poll is included, usually they are more prevalent in numbers than replies, but they're still ridiculously low compared to the views.
I'd expect this to happen, but not in so big of a scale. Why is apparently over 3 quarters of viewers of a topic not contributing?
It might be because one person might view a topic a lot of times, but even if you calculate everybody (somebody probably looks at a topic about 10 times if it's normal, or 50 times if it's large), there is still quite a handful of non-contributing views. Vut.

Edits with examples
*EDIT* e.g. my "Lurker" topic that I just made a few minutes ago. I personally viewed it about 3 or 4 times, while its total views are 9. That means 5 views (maximum 5 people, minimum 2 people) did not make any comment. This isn't very good of an example.
"What is wrong with this server?", another one I made a little longer than that. I personally viewed it about 5 times, and I'm guessing the 2 people who replied had the same count. That means 36 views (12 people?) saw it but gave no comment.
"How does this site look?", by jdf2. 66 replies, 865 views. Assuming all 66 replies were each made by different people, and that each of these people saw the thread 10 times, that would still leave 205 non-contributing views. That means at least 20 people who didn't look at a link for 4 seconds and then give their 2 cents. Vut.
*EDIT 2* "Will Minecraft die", by Lennie2002. 83 views, 1452 views. Assuming all 83 replies were each made by different people, and if each replier looked at the thread 10 times, that leaves over 622 non-contributing views. That's at least 50 people.
Yes, I am aware that people may not want to reply to the topic (don't really want to comment, or thread is not as expected). That's why I purposely picked question threads that can be perfectly answered on with a simple sentence. But still, the amount of non-contributing views are a bit overwhelming.

I would love to reply to more threads, but I either don't have the knowledge or a proper answer to or even that it's something everyone already knows. I love to be in discussions, not make minor replies or give simple feedback like "this looks nice" or "I agree."

I'm usually not automatically signed in and usually give my own opinion inside my head

Maybe some people are lazy, like me :I

Keep in mind any thread a member can see a non member can see. A member can post where as a non member cannot, same as how members can diamond while non members cannot yet both can view it.

Also true.

1:10 is a fairly good ratio considering most popular content will only get a 1:1000 ratio or so (depending on subject matter. More controversial subjects attract more comments).

Sometimes maybe there isn't enough information so no one replies? Its also possible that people go there to see what they mean, and if they have nothing to say on it, they don't reply.

Lots of times I click on a post that I cannot offer help to the person. Because of this, I don't post as I have no reason to.

erm... what?

What if they don't have anything to contribute to the topic?

Happens often, in my opinion It could be for these reasons. (Possibly More)
1. Someone views the topic, but cannot find anything good to contribute to it.
2. Feels that the post may be moved, or locked
3. Thinks the the thread is not worth contributing to.
4. Or just simply browsing through forums.
That is all I can think of at the moment. Hope that helped!
