Hello. LynxMC is a 24/7 Minecraft server that is Strict RP. Here at LynxMC you create a charactar with a storyline and you can then dwelve into the world of Alquana. The main focus is to interact with other people on things such as adventures and events and bring the most out of roleplay on minecraft. Roleplay Guide (Skip if you are confident you can roleplay and know alot.)
Hello. I am xXfalseXx the owner of LynxMC. Today I am going to write you a simple guide on how to roleplay. LynxMC is a 24/7 Strict RP Server, so you are most likely reading this because you are new to roleplay, and are interested in playing on LynxMC. Please note that the following guide is strictly for roleplay in MINECRAFT (no other game, although some terms you could use in other games). Let's get started.
What is Roleplay?
Roleplay is creating a charactar different from yourself. You can create one from your imagination, and pretend to be that charactar. Keep in mind that in true rp, there is no goal (other than personal ones you set as a charactar). Roleplay is not just one person pretending to be another, you can do this as a group which is in general more fun as you can interact with others, and shape a story as you go along. RP is featured in most MMO games you see, games include WoW, Runescape Skyrim. There is often confusion between RP and RPG. RP stands for Roleplay, and RPG for Role-playing Game. RPG is most normally an adventure game where your charactar takes on a set of tasks (i.e quests) but is in general more free. RP is strictly roleplaying, which is concentrating on shaping and showing off your charactar. Now you know the basics, let's dwelve into some harder stuff.
Creating A Charactar
Creating a charactar is just the beginning of roleplay. Most new people find this part difficult and often rush through it failing. First things first. You need to think up the basics for your charactar (i.e name, personality/traits and their appearance). A good idea to decide is by thinking of what time your charactar is roleplaying in (i.e medieval times, modern, egyptian). For example, if it was medieval, your charactar could be a male knight in war. Or if it was modern, you could be a female skateboarder (hehe). Once the basics are done, you can now think about the charactars history, where they live etc. A mistake I often see, that is reffered to as 'mary sue charactars' are charactars that are too perfect. If your charactar has a simple and perfect storyline with no flaws or mistakes that the charactar has made, you know you are doing everything wrong. Your charactar needs shape, how many people have you seen with PERFECT histories? No bad moments, no crying, no mistakes. I am not saying that you should make your charactar depressed, but give your charactar some weaknesses, or else it will make the roleplay very boring.
Charactar Behavior
Once you have made yourself a charactar you are happy with, it is time to put putting these things into practise. One thing you should remember at all times during rp is to BE your charactar. Act as if it's YOUR life, YOU'RE living it. If you are in the middle of dialogue do not run around the other person and jump about. Would you do that in real life? No. Stand infront of them and stay still as you would in real life. Keep your person roleplayable and exciting but believable. If your charactar is poisoned by a cave spider for example, you could say your leg is wounded and instead of running/sprinting you could move with sneak on, making your charactar seem as if it is wounded a limb as it is moving slower. Going deeper into charactar behavior, one thing you should watch out for is the language you use. if u typ lyk dis all the time nd do it whil in roleplay it will be rly iritatin fr srous rleplyrs to understnd u. Try your best to use full grammar, but if you are feeling confident and want to give your charactar that extra "edge," then if your charactar has a slight accent or is a pirate (rofl), then Yarr' typin' like this would maake some senss! Finally in this topic I am going to talk about IGNs (In Game Names) in rp. When you are roleplaying, do not approach someone and say "Hello PinkCreeper101, what are you doing at such a late hour?". Pretend the name above the charactar is just a small code you use to identify them, most players will have a custom nickname in game relating to their charactar, even once you see their nickname, remember your charactar dosen't know their name. Confirm by asking their name etc.
Rules To The Game
Now you've got the hang of it, let's start going into the hardcore stuff. I am now going to teach you a few 'rp rules' that are on LynxMC. An important rule that has been broken a few times, is NO METAGAMING. Metagaming is when you mix an OOC event into RP (OOC means Out of Charactar). For example, if you have an argument with a friend at school, and then start a war with their nation for no rp reason, and just because of the argument; that is Megagaming. It is very annoying and immature, and you are at risk of facing a temporary ban for doing so. Another rule that I fortunately seldom see being broken on Lynx is no powergaming. Powergaming is controlling peoples charactars. For example:
/me pushed Zoe so hard she fell over.
Instead of controlling Zoe's charactar, I could've done:
/me attempts to push Zoe.
That is giving Zoe more options in what do in the situation, for example she could step back, or follow your lead and fall. She could push you back or start to cry when you push her, but make sure you are not controlling the charactar of someone else, this is annoying. Another thing I'm going to mention is PVP on the server. When you are going to PVP, start off the combat with an rp argument. For example:
Player 1: You fool, do you know what you have brought upon yourself for killing my friend?
Player 2: You speak nonsense, I am not afraid of anything! (Hint, he might be brave, but he still has weaknesses)
Player 1: /me raises his fists in fury, summoning down dark power to assist him in combat against player 2.
Player 1: /me raises his sword and braces for combat.
That is a good example of a rp argument, leading onto a battle. Now that you know the most common rule in rp in lynx, it's time to confirm all of that and add a bit more knowledge.
Common Ettiquette
In roleplay we have manners, just as we do in real life. If you see a conversation between 2 people you do not know, and say "HEEEEEYYYYYYYYY LETS GO FISHING!" No. If you see 2 people roleplaying, you MAY approach them, but wait for the right time. Do not butt in in the middle of some great dialogue. It's rude and will spread a bad name about you throughout the community. I guess that's all for this bit.
RP Events
Now it's time to make things really spicey and realistic. You should try and make your roleplay as realistic as possible. By doing this, you could add different events. For example, if your charactar is getting married, to make it more interesting and fun, you could be LATE for the wedding. Another thing that is effective and VERY fun, is to create a really dramatic moment like a really well thought out moment where your charactar dies, and you now take on the role of another charactar. I'm not saying that if a spider kills you, you need to pick a new charactar, but after maybe a few weeks of your charactar you could make a dramatic event with friends where your charactar can die (it's up to you how they die) and you create a NEW charactar and use a different skin. These are all powerful RP events that can SHAPE your charactar really well and create an atmosphere were everyone feels involved. I have pretty much told you everything I know, so after some practise hopefully you'll be as good as I am. Read below for some tips and warnings.
Tips & Warnings
- Remember not to butt into random dialogue.
- If you see someone with a new skin, remember it means they are playing a whole new charactar.
- If someone makes it clear they don't want to roleplay with YOU, then leave them alone.
- Remember to use more than 3 words of rp when using /me.
- Use your common sense.
Lore (This is very important as it tells you the servers storyline, although it can be used for later on, but is reccomended that you read now):
The Dwarves were a powerful race, they lived on the corners of the world. Remaining unseen and unheard. But the day came, a powerful star fell down upon the world of Alquana, it had supernatural forces bound to it. Trapping anything that stood in it's way. And as it crashed, it his the city of the Dwarves. The Dwarves had ran, screaming and tearing their way accross the world. And after years of secrecy, a new race and exposed themselves to the Vikings. Of course the VIkings were frightened. They fought for years. Asgrim, the then Jarl of Feskrath was facing an ongoing onslaught. The Dwarves had awoken. Their deep slumber, disturbed by an ancient power coming from a meteor, that had caused them to leave the confines of their empire. They went insane, their king ordered an assault westwards, they killed everything in their path, they were ruthless, unstoppable, until they reached Feskrath. Asgrim fought for many days and nights by the side of his warriors, the Dwarvern hordes were endless it seemed. But they held strong, and pushed them back into their tainted mountain. Until an elder Viking Mage had a dream of a 'reincarnation'. And told the vikings. They were confused, but the elder mage was not. The Elder mage had conducted a plan. For 5 days it trained itself in the deepest places for magic and sorcery. For in it's dream was a dark secret that the mage had not shared. Mages had a secret power within them, named "Arcanthrust", such powerful forces could kill one. And the elder mage had planned to use it. But although being wise, it was impatient, for it takes years to tame such a skill and if not prepared one may die from such powers. The mage travelled to the highest mountain in all of Alquana now named as Lapsyan Mountain and summoned forces both dark and light. Creating a wave of Arcanthrust. The mage was strong and was eager to use his powers to see what he could do, and whether it could destroy the dwarves. The mage let all of it go, and the clouds parted. Rain fell, lightning striked and the dwarves were overpowered by the Arcanthrust. They were thrown back to the corners of the world. Sealed in powerful stone strongholds. And left there to die. But as they were left for death, the mage had died from such power, but was praised and buried by mourning people. For the mages foolishness had saved Alquana from terror...
It was 1000 AD, and the powerful spell that the elder mage had cast with Arcanthrust had worn off. The dwarves had been awoken from a very powerful sleep, and the stone strongholds had grown weary and weak. For 2 days the dwarves smashed their way through out of the long maze stronghold. Once they had finally found daylight they craved for human flesh, for they had remembered what happened to them almost 1000 years ago. A mage dwarf had summoned down a meteor from the sky. For it was to arrive in 2 weeks, and was to hit Feskrath. The dwarves were still not satisfied, and wanted to WATCH Feskrath burn.
When Asgrim, the Jarl of Feskrath heard from a messager, who just came from the Wizard, that a meteor was coming, he thought that was the end for the dwarves. The meteor would come in 2 weeks. In while, every day he kept walking in to the Wizard's office, watching the telescope. And at the 13th day, he saw it. It was rushing down with an extremely high speed. He gathered all the messagers of his kingdom, telling them to inform every single civillian in his kingdom. And also the guards. They must be informed. When he twisted the telescope, he saw the dwarves rushing to his castle, with the most powerful transport. They must have planned another attack, he thinks. But actually the dwarves came to see him die. When he saw the dwarves cheering, he got a weird feeling. He checked the meteor again, and realized it was not going towards the dwarvern mountain, but towards him. He quickly gathered his family, and escaped with horse and carriage. When the meteor made contact with the ground, it was closer to the place where he is now rather than the place where his kingdom is. He got thrown out of the carriage due the force of the impact the meteor made. The dwarves, who kept ranning after him, saw it. They didn't doubt whether to attack him or not. They grabbed their swords, and killed the Jarl. Since then, there is a meteor near the kingdom, and a new Jarl, which was a far uncle of Asgrim. Because he didn't live in the kingdom of Asgrim, he didn't got harmed by the Meteor. Though, he saw the meteor falling from the sky, worrying for Asgrims life.
For it is now 2012 AD and the Dwarves have settled themselves in a new place. For they were once crazy blood loving humanoids, and have now evolved and adapted to their surroundings, and are tamed wise skilled things. For it was only 12 years ago, that another millenium had passed. For legend has it that every millenium, a dispute between the vikings and dwarves spurts to life. For what will happen now?
