I have seen the news on the 1.8 pre-release. As the resource pack maker I am I couldn't help to notice "Blocks can now have custom visual variations in the resource packs" This is a feature I have waited a LONG time for. I would appreciate it if anyone knows how to utilize this new feature. Thx

Uhh, no. This new feature allows resource packs to incorporate different block models.
e.g. A dirt block could be a hexagonal prism.

This isn't very new... It's been here for quite a long time now...

Well, it's a new feature coming with 1.8...
I wouldn't call that old...

No. JSON format indicates that texture names go within brackets.
{
"parent": "block/door_bottom_rh",
"textures": {"bottom": "blocks/door_acacia_lower","top": "blocks/door_acacia_upper"}
}
Tags like this:
are titles referring to specific faces mentioned in the model file. You define what "top" is elsewhere and you write the texture filepath next to it.

I do not know exactly where I should put the alternate texture names. Can anyone help me out? It shows this:
{
"parent": "block/door_bottom_rh",
"textures": {
"bottom": "blocks/door_acacia_lower",
"top": "blocks/door_acacia_upper"
}
}
do I put the names like this?
{
"parent": "block/door_bottom_rh",
"textures": "stone"{
"bottom": "blocks/door_acacia_lower",
"top": "blocks/door_acacia_upper"
}
}
I dont quite get it
