OptiFine downloads as a Wordpad instead of opening in a .jar
It isn't letting me download the OptiFine installer without it being a WordPad document. I've tried opening it as a Java Runtime SE Platform, but the console would come up, flash, and be gone in a second. I can't see to find a fix to this problem after watching multiple videos. http://image.prntscr.com/image/f3da6c192929493d839f2815643cba91.png

If you have a .jar file, you click on your right mouse button and choose: open with.... and you click Java. I had that problem too.

uninstall java and reinstall it.

That's unnecessary. The problem lies with the default program chosen to run JAR files, which can be changed easily within Windows.

Try if from the original folder you downloaded it to or directly out of the mods folder. Mine won't double click from a different folder. And I'm thinking the latest version needs to be clicked to be installed sometimes they don't have to though.

You've set wordpad as the default application to open .jar files for some reason. Right click on the downloaded file in your downloads folder and select 'open with'. Click on Java and tick the box that says to use that every time.

I done that, all I see is the console flash on and off my screen in about a second.

It's very likely that you do not have Java installed as a regular program. Minecraft uses its own Java runtime apart from the standard one you'd get from Oracle. You can get Java here.

why would you need the installer? just download the main file and drop it into the mods folder?

I tried that, but it wasn't working for some reason.
