PermalinkIn 2099, in a different dimension where Earth is quite different. Technology has advanced quite normally like our Earth, but the major difference is that instead of wild animals, there were monsters. There's a lot of different kinds, but to put it in short, they're all dangerous and capable of killing a man rather quickly. The most important thing about this lies within a desert to the North. In the middle of the desert is a very large canyon with thousands upon thousands of caves on the sides of the walls. No one knows how deep the canyon is.
It's said that a gigantic dragon lives at the very bottom and since no one has even been that far down, it remains just a myth. Sadly, it was real. In 2100, the thousandth anniversary since it was sealed at the bottom of North Valley, citizens nearby reported very large tremors in the middle of the night. Two weeks past when these tremors started some catastrophic happened.
The great dragon, dubbed "The North", destroyed the human population with ease. Everyone was unprepared. Almost everyone didn't survive. A small army of people survived, thanks to a mining expedition that led them deep underground. It took half a month to reach the surface, but luckily, they had brought food and drink with them.
After the devastation, the dragon went back to its slumber, tired by the sheer energy it took to break the seal and destroy the world. Climate changed dramatically, and terrain and environment were drastically altered. Humanity slowly regained population. By the time they made one large town, they discovered a new threat: Monsters still existed, though the numbers were scarce after the Devastation due to raging fires and tremors.
The town was near the old mine, which seemingly had strange qualities. It built a barrier around a radius, around the town. A group of fifteen people investigated. Apparently, the source was an odd crystal found deep underground. Soon the population grew quite large, and families wanted to leave to start new towns. Knowing about the monsters, they mined large crystals and sent them with families to create new towns with these stones as the one thing preventing the invasion of beasts and monsters. This "original town" soon became a very large city and the capital of the world. The fifteen people became rulers. Though, there was one thing they never shared with the people. They possessed a very small crystal about the size of a shoe. They split it into fifteen different shards, and each person got one. These shards had strange powers...
Each shard granted a supernatural ability. Soon they grew old. They were afraid their children couldn't handle the crystals, so they crushed the shards into powder and used them to make a deck of fifty-six playing cards. They still had the same properties of the shards, but they were much more hidden.
King Leon, on his death bed, handed his son the deck of cards, and told him of it. King Leon's son was very bright and trust-worthy, so he kept his promise and never told anybody. Until he became a king (as in, when his mother died). That was when monsters were amplified in power and brains, and manage to kill Her Majesty with bows and arrows. Knowing that this happened before the Dragon awoke before via the Chronicle of The World I, a book written by Brian Gutsworten, one of the Fifteen, King Falen asked of his most loyal, and best child-hood friend, knight, Yami to spread word of the desire for fifty-six of the world's best warriors. And you could probably guess his plans for those fifty-six people.
