You don't need to port forward if you are going to have just a few people (4 at the most). All you need to do is download Hamachi. Also if you plan on it being a big server your options are renting a server (payments every month) or setting up your own and port forwarding.

What waffle said, hamachi is the best way to go if its just a private server.
