How do I make my avatar a picture of my skin?

I've seen lots of people where their avatar was a picture of their skin. Now there was lots of different combos like only the head, the entire body, the body running, and so on. All I want to know is how do I do that. Anyone care to explain?

For my avatar, I took a screenshot while I was in the inventory screen, and then used an image editing program to crop it so that it was small enough.
