Installing Mods

My son is 7 years old and loves to play minecraft and watch videos via youtube. He has seen all types of mods for weapons and other things which he would like to experiment with. I have downloaded a mod installer as well as winrar and minecraftforge, but I do not understand how to launch and install these.
Can anyone help a novice with simple instructions for how to get this done?

I'm not sure if 1.6.2 is any different actually, but from what I've seen (people saying they've finally found out how to install mods on 1.6.2) it is.
Basically to get earlier versions what you have to do is run the mc launcher, but don't click play yet. Instead click on the third tab from the left along the top of the window that says profile editor.
That's all I can remember, as I'm not at my pc at the minute but ill be able to help you in (some v.v) hours, unless someone else does, which I'm sure will happen as pmc is full of.. uh... Helpfulness ^_^
